5.0 out of 5 stars Alice in German
As a professor of German literature, I must declare that this book is an excellent translation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." A faithful version to the English is this translation. Carroll's wondrous verbal jokes and puns remain alive in German. Very recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning
If you are a person looking for a relatively easy German book to read, you might want to know that the book is in Old English print. If the reader is not used to the print, especially in German, it is a big headache to read. If you can get past the print, it is a good book. It's not very useful, however, if you are trying to learn German.

1.0 out of 5 stars Alice auf deutsch, January 28, 2004

Please be warned that this book is written in the old fashioned German script font and was very hard to read. It actually gave me such a head ache that I couldn't pick the book back up and never finished it.

what a pity. i cannot judge the translation but orthography is a complete desaster. and please never try to listen to it! a very strong american accent trying to read a german text full of mistakes. it was hard for me - as a german - to figure out the different words.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two different versions, June 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Just be aware that these reviews are confusing because some are for the old zimmerman version and some are for the echo library version. The old zimmerman version has the old German script and original illustrations. It has also changed the parables to fit the German culture. This was done with the full support and approval of Lewis Carroll. It is out of print, but some of the reviews still refer to this older version. The echo library version, maroon cover, is in modern english type and has no illustrations. Sad. There is no explanation of the text or translation, though it may be direct from the old zimmerman version. If you can get a copy of the older version with the old script and illustrations it is a treasure! Plus it is beneficial to know how to read the old script.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great classic, May 12, 2010
By
The story is a great classic and is fun to read in German. Knowing the story helps a lot when reading in a foreign language. The edition I gotAlice's Abenteuer im Wunderland: Illustrierte Ausgabe (German Edition) was in modern typeface.

Other great German classics of children's literature are Max und Moritz: eine Bubengeschichte in sieben Streichen (German Edition) and Die Biene Maja und Ihre Abenteuer (German Edition).

Great book. Format on kindle is good. The old german letters are not that bad. Easily readable if you have ever seen them before, and you probably have if you can read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool classic in German!, September 4, 2002

I purchased this book for a friend who reads German. It looks great with nice illustrations. I was a little worried about the Dover edition since they are normally thin floppy paperbacks, but this book exceeded my expectations. The font is not bad like someone else mentioned. It looks like old English, but I don't find it hard to distinguish the letters.
I just wish there were more classics in German on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doch..., March 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Alices Abenteuer im Wunderland (Paperback)
It would not have been so difficult had it been in an old English typeface. Unfortunately, it was in an old German typeface: something similar to Schwaben Alt perhaps. If you can find a sample typeface on the www, good, otherwise you will have to reverse-engineer it from familiar words and pencil in your notes. It was an unexpected additional challenge, but a welcome one.
