5.0 out of 5 stars Lewis Carroll's "Alice" novels with illustrations by Mervyn Peake, August 19, 2005
This review is from: Alice's Adventures Slipcase Edition: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (Hardcover)
This is a reasonable, hardcover box-set of Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice" books. It makes a great gift for Alice lovers of any age or for introducing a young reader to Carroll's imaginative, delightful, and thought-provoking children's stories.

What makes this edition better than the average copy of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" is that it features the celebrated, rarely-seen illustrations originally penned by Meryn Peake for a 1940's printing of the "Alice" books.

Mervyn Peake is remembered as the author of the "Gormenghast" fantasy novels, as well as for his fine illustriations of classics like the "Alice" books and "Treasure Island." In my opinion, his illustrations are more unique, artistic, and magical than John Tenniel's drawings for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's works, with which we are all more familiar.

If you a looking to purchase a copy of "Alice" to put on your bookshelf, I definitely recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent and Hilarious, April 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Alice's Adventures Slipcase Edition: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (Hardcover)
Lewis Carrol's stories: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass are amazing stories with hilarious lines and trickery. Complete fantasy with dim-witted and funny characters that can outsmart Alice, but not even themselves! Alice's adventures are fantastic and any fantasy lover should take this opportunity in an instant! (Humpty Dumpty makes sense of the Jabberwocky poem!) If you want to laugh hard, read Alice's Adeventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
