Book Description

8 and up
A newly illustrated version of the children’s classic by the acclaimed artist Michael Foreman—two-time winner of the Kate Greenaway Award and many others. The art brings the “real” Alice into the wonderland she inspired.

One of the most beloved children’s stories of all time now has new and magical illustrations, based on the child who inspired the tale. Artist Michael Foreman studied Charles Lutwidge Dodson’s (Lewis Carroll) original photographs of the real Alice before embarking on this project. The result is a bold, mischievous, and very real character that is surprisingly modern. As Foreman notes, young Alice Liddell “looked ready to break out of the Victorian photograph and run free.” This painted Alice seems that way, too, wearing her simple pale striped dress, white stockings, and brown button boots. Other characters in the book have their basis in real people, too: Old Father William resembles Alice’s father, Henry Liddell, and the young man is Lewis Carroll himself. And there is a real contrast between Alice’s “normal” world, shown in sepia, and the bright, brilliant colors of the wonderland she discovers.

Michael Foreman was born in the seaside town of Pakefield, England, and received his M.A. from the Royal College of Art. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious Kate Greenaway Award, and has also received the Smarties Book Prize, The Kurt Maschler Award, the Children’s Book Award, the Bologna Book Prize and the Francis William’s Illustration Award.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 6–In a note, Foreman explains that he has based his artwork for this classic on photographs taken by Carroll of the "real Alice" (Alice Liddell), some of which are reproduced in this book. The illustrator points out how, with her "mischievous little face," she "seems as much a child of the 1960s or the twenty-first century as the 1860s." With her short gray-black hair, turned-up nose, and simple striped dress, his Alice makes an almost comfortingly drab counterbalance to the otherwise colorful characters and bright backdrops that fill the tale. Ranging from small vignettes to the occasional two-page painting, the watercolors shimmer with seaside shades of blue, green, and yellow. The pictures are packed with movement, whimsy, and humor, and are perfectly placed to match the pace of the action. Scenes depicting the time before and after Alice's descent into the rabbit hole are done in brown and white, neatly delineating the beginning and end of her adventure. This version makes a solid choice for those libraries looking to spiff up their Alice collections with a splash of color.–Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

This review is from: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Hardcover)
Many of us read this book as a child and then to our own children. After I read it again for bookclub, I went and looked up study guides and found that there was so much more to the book then just reading it as a children's book. There are many themes in this book. Alice falls down the rabbit hole and her adventures begin. She not only grows in size- small, large, small again, normal, but she grows in wisdom and maturity. Her goal is to reach the garden she sees through the small door. In order to get through the door, she meets many characters who will teach and perplex her throughout her journey. Each character has a purpose or refers to an old truth we may not know. It is a learning experience. Teaching is brought up throughout the book in the form of story telling, playing games, comparing your own education with others, and then not being sure what you really know. During the jury scene, Alice is able to grow up on her own without the help of outside source as she stands up to the King insisting on justice and true evidence. We see Alice grow from a child to becoming more adult. When she awakens, she tells her sister of her dream. Her sister then dreams or pictures what Alice heard and saw, and sees her sister as someday being a young woman who will have children to hear this story. Carroll was a mathematician. He loved games of all sorts, especially word games and logic puzzles. This is quite evident with his play on words of logic, and the relationship between sense and nonsense. The illustrations in this book by Mr. Foreman, are based on the actual pictures of Alice Liddell. Alice was a child of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford. In researching the author, you will find some disturbing things, but do not let that take away from the story itself. 'Through the Looking Glass" continues Alice's adventures into Wonderland.
