wonderful and weird.,

I was in the children's book section the other day looking for a gift for a friend's little boy. This book caught my eye -- not for him, but for ME. I don't remember the pop-up books of my youth (admittedly, I only had "T'was the Night Before Christmas" and "Mother Goose") being this spectacular or complex. This book is visually stunning and so viscerally creative. Why only 4 stars? Because honestly, the illustrative style (and the story itself) is kind of creepy and I don't know how appropriate it would be for a small child. But if you're a design geek, this book rocks!

Great Illustrations,

J.Otto's illustrations are incredibly amazing!!!! Besides I think this pop-up book really reflects Alice in wonderland's world. It has a lot of different types of pop-ups, and tiny details which make the difference such as a book on the first page that can be opened and has actual pages inside. Everything unfolds, hides or something.
I actually bought this book twice, the first one was for me and I found it so great that I bought a second copy to give as a gift. The only recomendation I would give is not to buy it for small children since it is a very fragile book

A little too mature for young audiences,

This book is really too mature for young kids. I gave it to my 5 year old niece for her birthday, and while I was reading it I regretted giving it to her because I had to change some of the phrases (as I was reading) to make them more kid-friendly. If my sister ever reads it aloud to her young daughter, she'll probably be miffed with me for giving it as a gift.

Get lost in this 'Wonderland',

The illustrations in this version of the Carroll tale are rich and imaginative, with eye-popping pop ups alongside the original 'Alice' text. This pop-up version is destined to be a classic for it's gorgeous designs.

Visually entrancing,

I bought this book new and dirt cheap when my twin girls were born and they are now a few months past 3 and we have had this book out a couple of times and they love it and will ask for it and will beg to pull the tabs, openning the oven, making Alice kick, making the Cheshire Cat disappear, making the flamingo hit the hedgehog, and so on. The girls can recognize the "Alice in Wonderland" general story lines in this book which is good, and the pop up and classic Seibold artwork keep them enthralled, but this book is best for a Seibold lover, an older child, or the Alice enthusiast/collector. In true Seibold from the written words can often be very difficult to read even for an adult, there is no good transition from scenario to scenario in the book, and the pull tabs et al unless you want the book destroyed are best operated by an adult or older child. If it were not for these three things I'd have given it a 5 star plus rating.

A Must for Alice Fans!!,

J. Otto Seibold has a wonderful style - I recommend all of his children's books. The Alice Pop Up has some wonderful interactive pages - including a disappearing Cheshire Cat. The pop up of the caterpillar on the mushroom is probably my favorite. You can't possibly be disappointed by this book!

Hmmm...more for older kids & adults.,
This review is from: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Pop-Up) (Hardcover)
I found this in mint condition in a used bookstore for 5 dollars, and bought it thinking my toddler would like the pop-up features. Only upon actually reading it, did I discover that the way the story is written is not very kid-friendly, and some of the illustrations and pop-up features are really pretty weird & surreal. The only feature my little one loved was the pull-down tab that covers the entire cheshire cat except its smile [ok, I loved it too!].But as an adult, I enjoyed the book, and it is definitely a unique take on Lewis Carroll's classic tale...there is definitely something of the wonderland in this book!
