Book Description

Signet Regency Romance March 3, 1992
When Lady Coombs was widowed, she found herself in reduced circumstances. But the spirited Alicia chose to become a shopkeeper rather than impose on her overburdened brother. Unfortunately, along with this undermining her position in country society, Alicia now found herself and her adolescent daughter without protection and suddenly vulnerable to the unprincipled Sir Francis Tackar. Even the kind attentions of the Marquis of Stronbert were disturbing—to a woman who had suffered in marriage.

Regency Romance by Laura Matthews; originally published by Dell

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the hero, June 29, 2011

This review is from: Alicia (Kindle Edition)
I've noticed that this author tends to write two different types of heroes. The first is the "heroic" hero, the hero who almost immediately realizes that the heroine is the one for him, and does everything to woo and court her, and to fix all her problems. The tension in these books is usually due to the heroine herself having some sort of issue, whether low birth, previous scandal, or lost love. Her second type of hero is the "forced" hero, the type who finds himself, due to circumstances beyond his control, with a wife he's not sure he wanted, and inevitably the tension in the book is due to the main characters growing to love each other, but hurting each other first, with misunderstandings, and occasionally infidelity. So, I assumed that the hero in this book was the first type, a man who saw almost straight away that the heroine was the woman for him, and set out to make things right, to make her life better. The heroine's history (a very bad abusive marriage, abandonment of her and her child, and rampant infidelity) was what brought the tension into the story. But then, just after announcing to the heroine's brother that he intended to marry her and protect her,(so we can assume at this point he loves her) even knowing her inevitable dislike and distrust of men and marriage, our hero goes to London and has sex with a courtesan........ Well, I admit, that threw me! Didn't seem to fit in with the "heroic" hero. It definitely made the hero less....well, just less....! And I know they weren't yet engaged, and that he wasn't sure of anything with her after what he'd found out, but still.....he's a "heroic" hero. He's not supposed to want any other woman once he's found her! So, unfortunately, this incident kind of ruined the book for me. He didn't live up to my expectations. So that's why only three stars. When the hero is supposed to be perfect, then he's supposed to be PERFECT! I know, stupidly romantic of me, but there you go. I do read these RegRom's for a reason....!

I have read many of this author's books and have liked them all. I do think that this is her best. The characters are very well drawn and realistic. The plot is also well done. It is not one of those silly plots where the characters would have no problems if they just communicated better.
