Gr 6 Up--This exploration of one of the most enduring puzzles of modern times begins with a description of Barney and Betty Hill's 1961 experience with a UFO and its crew, which is considered to be the prototypical alien-abduction case. Accounts by numerous other self-proclaimed abductees are used to highlight the types of creatures, spaceships, and "medical" examinations commonly associated with alien contact. Unusual descriptions of alien-human hybrid children reported by some abductees lends a strongly sinister note to the more typical complaints of painful tests, terrifying paralysis, scars, and implanted devices. Black-and-white photographs of flying objects, burned and disturbed plants and soil, an allegedly mutilated dead cow, and crop circles illustrate the fact that mysterious occurrences may take place anywhere on Earth. The text, which includes statements by UFO believers and prominent skeptics, presents a wide variety of evidence that allows readers to form their own opinions. Most of the case histories, criticisms, and explanatory theories may be found in other balanced works such as Anne Canadeo's UFOs (Walker, 1990; o.p.) and Michael Arvey's UFOs (Greenhaven, 1989), as can the stock photographs. This volume's strength is its supplementary material: addresses and activities of four UFO-concerned organizations, two bibliographies listing a total of 45 sources, and a finely detailed index. The spacious format, clearly presented nonjudgmental text, and large number of current explanations for these phenomena make this a valuable resource.

By A Customer
This review is from: Alien Abductions (Great Mysteries) (Library Binding)
This book has all the basic information that someone would needto know who is new with alien abduction phenomena. I would recomendit to beginners of all ages, not just children. Also, it has many good pictures and illustarations. I also liked the fact that it was not biased for or against the subject.
