Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3–Think of aliens as little green men? Think again. The narrator of this book, a jug-eared youngster whose crew cut resembles a well-mown lawn, has a different take. Alien invaders, he says, are all around us. They are in our yards, weaving webs, setting up whole cities underground, spying on us with their huge, multifaceted eyes. The invaders, of course, are insects, and this young man is making friends with them, just in case. The brief text, English on the top of each verso, literal Spanish in red on the bottom, gives hints that are fleshed out in the illustrations. Drawn on animation paper, the Prismacolor artwork, executed in multiple shades of indigo, is dark and mysterious. A luminous sheen adds to the sense of menace. This involving introduction to insects has plenty of child appeal and could also serve as a pattern for writing activities.

From the Publisher

Sneaking. Creeping. Crawling. What if the television is wrong? What if aliens aren't little green men? What if they aren't coming, but are already here? What if the bugs that you had always thought harmless were actually invaders from the furthest reaches of space? What should we do, make friends?

Written with the insight of a true bug fanatic, Alien Invaders / Invasores extraterrestres is sure to capture the imagination of young and old alike. It is a story that anyone who has ever encountered a creature creeping and crawling its way around the house or through the garden can relate to. According to Lynn Huggins-Cooper, "Mom says they are just bugs... (But) They sure look like aliens to me!"

The compelling story is just the beginning of this full text Spanish/English translation. The illustrations glow eerily and the alien insects seem to dive right through the page ready to invade your home. These lively illustrations (which give a nod to the illustrator's animation background) start as soft-toned line drawings in various shades of indigo blue. They are then manipulated to obtain a broad range of hues that add depth, radiance, and the fanciful luminescence that emanates from these pages. The total effect of Leick's illustrations in Alien Invaders/Invasores extraterrestres is one that enhances the text and increases the humor and range of the story.

The book is presented in bilingual format with full story appearing in both English and Spanish. A keyword vocabulary page is found in the back of the book to jumpstart learning in either language.

The book is available in both hardcover ISBN 0972497390 and paperback ISBN 0974199273.

Invaders have landed, although not where you may think! These little creatures camouflaged by shiny suits and robot like legs has setup camp in your backyard!

Alien Invaders/Invasores Extraterrestres is a wonderful teaching tool for children that parents, as well as teachers will enjoy using- not just because it is written in both English and Spanish, but also because it reveals the world of insects in their natural habitats.

Graphics are superb and sure to entertain kids of all ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun creative thinking for children, March 31, 2005
This review is from: Alien Invaders/Invasores extraterrestres (Bilingual) (Hardcover)
Written in both English and Spanish, Alien Invaders is a look at the world of insects. If there are aliens on the earth then perhaps they are insects with their bizarre appearance and habits. This is a look through a young child's eyes at how insects could be viewed as aliens. I really like the books of this series that have complete English and Spanish texts so a child can build their vocabulary in another language easily. Alien Invaders is a highly recommended children's book with wonderful illustrations and a real pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative, bilingual and extremely well illustrated children's book!, September 19, 2006
This review is from: Alien Invaders/Invasores extraterrestres (Bilingual) (Hardcover)
Informative book about the bugs that rule/live around us. This bilingual book has basic english sentences that are translated into spanish on the same page. It was fun to try to pronounce some of the words I was trying to learn in spanish. Bonnie Leick, illustrator, is absolutely amazingly talented. Her drawings are all dark but the color she uses brings out the importance of certain items and adds mystery to the alien bugs that live around us every day. There is also a vocabulary list on the last page of singular/plural nouns in english and spanish which makes this entire book educational in a fun and creative way.
