Book Description

March 31, 2005
Roz Kaveney, an expert in science fiction literature and film, has written an entertaining and enlightening new read on the genre. She explores the history of science fiction film and literature, the recurring themes and characters across the genre, development of special effects technology and the advent of CGI, the business and culture of movie franchises, and the legitimization of "geek culture" through the blockbuster successes of sci-fi movies. Films discussed include Dark City, Strange Days, the Star Wars series, the Terminator films, the Alien quartet, and Galaxy Quest.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An incredibly necessary text--arming the geeks with tools to read films for the DVD generation--and possibly regeneration. Clear, simple text, in which an understanding of slash fiction is as important to the text as an encyclopedic knowledge of a hundred years of written SF, and what movies mean."--Neil Gaiman

"An exemplary book of its kind. For any other authors considering tackling this subject, it is the book to beat."--Charles Shaar Murray

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to recent SF film, February 1, 2006
This review is from: From Alien to The Matrix: Reading Science Fiction Film (Paperback)
Those films chosen by Kaveney inform the reader about which SF tropes she finds the most distinctive. They are tropes of gender, the postmodern and the post-human. And Kaveney carefully and with much delight tries to delineate the histories of these tropes as well.

Simply a wonderful work.

'Waking into Dream' was always the working title for this collection of writings on science fiction film; like many working titles, it has served as a useful seed around which my ideas have crystallized in the two years I have taken to work on the book. Read the first page
