One day young Ben tells his friends that there is an alien living in his house. Who knows where he's from - "Mars, stars, space" - the point is tat "His face is covered with bike tracks. His body comes apart like Lego. He pulls out his teeth and says 'my pearlies.' He pulls off his hair and says 'my rug.' He walks on three legs, rat-a-tap-tap."
That very same day the "alien" tells his friends that he has moved into a monster's house. Who knows where he's from - "Park, jungle, zoo" - the point is, "His face is as smooth as butter. His body is stretchy like rubber. He twists into every letter of the alphabet. He even walks on his hands."
Each regales his audience with the foibles of the other, but slowly, inexorably the two become inhabitants of the same planet, as well as the same house, even kindred spirits - which is just as well since they are grandfather and grandson. What the texts can't tell us, McLeod's illustrations do - warts and all.

Endearing and Funny,
By Jan (Calgary, Alberta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Alien in My House (Hardcover)
"An Alien in My House" is an endearing and funny tale of a grandson and grandfather adjusting to living together. The boy thinks his grandfather is an alien because of his medical machinary and aging body. The grandfather thinks his grandson is a monster because of his high energy and love of computer games. This universal story of the generations living together touches those of all cultures. It is told with humour and the lyrical prose of Shenaaz Nanji. The illustrations by Chum McLeod are colourful and accessible to people of all backgrounds. "An Alien in my House" is an enjoyable read for parents and kids under ten. The ending is touching and reinforces the value of accepting peoples' differences.

When I first saw this in the bookstore my kids couldn't put it down because of all the colorful pictures! And lo and behold the content is just as superb. My son could relate to Ben because of his relationship with his grandfather. A must for any parent interested in creating strong familial links between their children and their parents.
