Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This abridged classic is buoyed by a spirited dramatization featuring Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie, also known, respectively, as "Spock" and "Q" to Star TrekR fans. The Time Traveler's tale of the future is a disturbing vision of the human situation as it appeared to Wells in the late 19th century. The Traveler encounters a community consisting of only two species of animals: the barbaric Morlocks and the gentle Eloi. The evolution of these two species began in industrialized England. Nimoy, as the Time Traveler, and de Lancie, as his 19th-century friend and confidant, are superb in their roles and clearly having fun with this production. The supporting crew of readers provide a robust atmosphere of doubt, debate, and incredulity. This work is part of a promising new sf series distributed by Simon & Schuster Audio. Highly recommended.?Ray Vignovich, West Des Moines P.L., Iowa

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done for a modern audience, June 21, 2000
This review is from: The Alien Voices Presents: The Time Machine (Audio Cassette)
The Time Machine is a wonderful story, written by a master who long before our time could see that society would create a great divide between the `haves' and the `have-nots', and by extrapolating the outcome, gave us the pretty but incapable Eloi and the ugly but capable Morlocks of the far future. The Time Traveller is Wells, disillusioned with the world he lives in, but his fictional counterpart has the means to escape, to travel through time, only to discover to his horror, that human progress is ultimately all for nought. Alien Voices give us a faithful adaption of this classic tale which, for the most part, is realised by the wonderful Leonard Nimoy. With his marvellously gravelly deep voice, one could listen to him tell a story for hours. Familiar Star Trek luminaries and friends round out the cast. I was very pleased to hear the entire story adapted, as opposed to the 1960 film which omits the Time Traveller's final and terrifying adventure in the novel. It's a medium well-suited for the headphones, but hey, listen to it anywhere, anytime - it's still great. A marvellous retelling for a modern audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Alien Voices Presents: The Time Machine (Alien Voices), February 17, 2007

This is a review of the audibook "The Alien Voices Presents: The Time Machine (Alien Voices)"

An original script, full-cast, full-production, original score, radio adaptation. If there was an audio-book "Hollywood", this is what it would sound like. Leonard Nimoy stars as the time traveler. It is helpful that Nimoy's reputation as a space faring time traveler gives the story an extra degree of verisimilitude. Although many of the finer details from Well's original story are lost in this abbreviated version, for the most part it sticks to the original plot and is highly entertaining and makes for a wonderful listening experience. Recommended.

My first taste of Alien Voices has left me hungry for more. Having read the book (The Time Machine) and seen the movie, Alien Voices presentation sent chills down my spine! Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie are masters of Science Fiction. I look foward to hearing the rest of the Alien Voices series and am purchasing my next one NOW!
