4.0 out of 5 stars Well-done production, July 11, 2005

This review is from: Alien Voices: Time Machine (Cd) (Alien Voices Presents) (Audio CD)
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio CD production. It's abridged, to say the least, so much of the detail and nuance of the original text is gone. But I think the central spirit of the story was captured extremely well. I listen to audio books on the commutes to and from work, and my guage of these books is how closely I pay attention. I didn't just pay close attention to this one--I sometimes sat in my car after arriving at home or at work, to listen for a little bit longer. Like a child who wants another bedtime story before bed.

Whether you like the story itself depends on your own individual taste. I've always thought that Wells' vision of the distant future was ominous, depressing, and utterly brilliant. He neatly skewers the conventional wisdom of his time (not so different from our own today) about the eternal, ever-onward-and-upward progress of humanity. Yet at the same time, there's a note of hope in his story. Note hope for the distant future so much as hope for us pathetic mortals, trapped in our own skins, but still able to care for each other. Countless later science fiction tales have built on this same theme.

I thought Nimoy, de Lancie and the others all performed very well. The odd, robotic quality of the Elois' voices was a bit distracting, but not terribly so.

If you like audio books, and you like science fiction, I highly recommend this title. Well worth the money.

Familiar faces from all four of Star Trek's TV sagas lend their incredible vocal talents to one of the greatest science fiction classics of all time. The story of a time traveler and his horrific tale of life far into the future captivates and enthralls, and is made all the more incredible with the riveting vocal talents of Leonard Nimoy and John De Lancie. This first offering by Nimoy and De Lancie's joint audio venture, ALIEN VOICES, is a delight. I also highly recommend the other performances by Alien Voices - Jules Verne's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's THE LOST WORLD, and another classic tale by the classic H.G. Wells, THE INVISIBLE MAN. I thought all these performances were brilliant, and I eagerly look forward to the next offering from ALIEN VOICES. Don't keep me waiting long!
