5.0 out of 5 stars Alien From the Darkness, June 14, 2000
This review is from: Alien from the Darkness (VHS Tape)
This is your basic hentai anime, or adult Japanese animation, video. There is quite a lot of sex and nudity in it, if that's your type of fun. The story starts when a government ship called the Muze is sent to investigate the loss of contact to the cargo ship Zogne. On board, all the men have been drained of life and the women are covered in a green ooze. A survivor, the beautiful Flair, is found and rescued. Hikari, the main character, finds that the ship Zogne was carrying Metrogria, a drug that kills off the immune system. On board the Muze, crew members are each dying away in the same manner as the Zogne's crew. At last, the alien and the traitor are revealed. Being an H-anime, all characters are female, which means lesbians. Blood and gore are present, also. Uncensored and subbed in English. Dubbed in Japanese.

2.0 out of 5 stars It certainly looks good, but AFTD is so bland it's hard to recommend., November 5, 2008

Meh... I really don't know why I do this to myself. I kept sitting in front of the feature presentation saying "Gee, I wonder if this is going to be like every other tentacle hentai I've seen for the past eight years." I was irritated to find out just how right I was even before the anime began; it just seems originality and hentai don't get a long very well. I will be fair, though: What Alien From the Darkness lacks in personality, it gains in appearances.

The animation to this title is literally fantastic, between the varied character designs and impressive space ships, the continuity is near perfection, the underwear isn't always white (I know that sounds downright perverted, but it essentially means that the animators weren't lazy) and while the characters were all 2D stocks, I found it easier to sympathize with a few of them this time. The latter is surprisingly rare for me to do with named hentai females who are usually bound to live after juicy encounters with monsters solely because they have a name. This may also be one of few tentacle hentai where the deaths actually make a little sense (it is an alien after all) and it's hard to call it overly misogynistic considering how none of the deaths are gory or graphic in that immature, evisceration-obsessed fashion. However, none of this makes up for the fact that the sex in Alien from the Darkness - which need I remind you is primarily the reason why we're here - is surprisingly mediocre.

In retrospect, the sex scenes aren't that bad because they're not too repulsive and I was actually intrigued by the monster's blind animalistic motivations (it's an alien... yet it likes human women). It's just that the scenes involving the monster were lacking everything that makes the common tentacle sex scene so bizarrely captivating. There was nothing original to them; there were rarely any new or unique angles in camera or characters, barely enough close-ups, too many off-screen encounters and the scenes were so short it would be enough time to load lead into an automatic pencil. The tentacle sex scenes are just hanging there like the animators didn't want to include them. I actually found myself excited to see animated human characters going down with each other rather than with the tentacles which is NOT something to admire about a TENTACLE hentai!!

It even reminded me of those godawful sci-fi movies from the 1980's and 90's both called Breeders, only this one knew its audience better and had better acting. Now that I mention it though, the English voice acting is unsurprisingly bad with maybe one or two decent performances here and there, but again, another anime hentai staple. The most laughable aspect about the voice acting comes from the protagonist's pet ferret that, in both versions, is voiced by an actual person instead of different or original sound effects. I may be one to talk when it comes to being lazy, but man... that's just embarrassing to me. The entire time I could just picture both Japanese and English actresses making rodent-like noises.

I also can't help but wonder how much of a cop-out it was for Hikari and Yuri to just suddenly announce they're siblings near the end of the OAV. It's like the writers couldn't think of some other way to make their scenes near the end more dramatic and just suddenly decided to have them call each other `sister' because they both have Japanese names. They didn't even act close to each other in previous scenes!

Despite its great looks, AFTD is a very bland hentai. The entire OAV was covered with predictable clichés familiar to the entire genre: same nihilistic theme, same stockpile of 2D female characters, anti-climactic plot twists, guessable solutions... everything you've seen in previous tentacle hentai you'll see it again here with the most noticeable difference being this one is slightly cleaner than most.

I'd recommend it solely if you want to see some actually good animation in a hentai post-Urotsukidoji, but even that recommendation is a little half-hearted and bland much like the hentai itself. On a final note, I have to say that it felt pretty immature to have the smartest character in the story be a male ferret named Einstein.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Real Shock for First Timers, December 8, 2000
This review is from: Alien from the Darkness (VHS Tape)
Alien From the Darkness was the first "Hentai" movie I ever saw, and it suprised me as much as Tentacle-sex can surprise someone. Essentially, this movie is for the person who doesn't mind a few tentacles or what not with his/her adult material. While there are lesbian scenes, only one is actually worth noting. And I won't anyway. Don't buy this movie unless you're prepared to deal with a new kind of adult material. Unless you've seen this kinda stuff before, in which case, the babes are hot, so go for it.
