Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Hours after the Earth's first colony is established in space, the outpost is destroyed. Soon a transport ship is attacked and the people of Earth unify to fight a menace from space. Three young people are destined to be key players in the Space Cavalry's first victory over the alien forces: Nathan, bound to avenge his girlfriend who was on the destroyed transport ship; Shane, who watched as her parents were murdered in the recent war against robots; and Cooper, an outcast, test-tube human born without a mother or father and maybe without a soul. They are shaped into a fighting team lucky enough to capture an alien ship that crashes on Mars. Together they repel the first attacks on Earth's solar system. Based on a Fox Network television show, "Space: Above and Beyond," this first entry in the series is nicely timed to capitalize on the post Independence Day interest in space opera. Royce is no Robert Heinlein, but he spins an exciting adventure, even if the characters and their actions are predictable. Worth trying especially if the TV series becomes a hit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool, September 13, 2000
This review is from: The Aliens Approach: A Novel (Space - Above and Beyond) (Paperback)
I thought this book was pretty cool. IT is based on the telivision series which comes on Saturdays at 11:00 am on SciFi. The book is set in the near future(2058) and our first out of the solar system colonies are attacked by a once unknown alien force. Our best pilots and Starships are no match for them when we are in very little numbers, our SpaceCarriers end up shredded. Anyway, it is about an air wing called the 58th which are later called the Wild Cards since you don't know what they are going to do to the enemy next. IF you want to find out the ending, read the book and see how it turns out.
