Book Description

For the first time ever, the eyewitness in one of the world's most intriguing and least known UFO cases speaks out in public and gives complete information never previously revealed about his terrifying encounter with aliens in a dark forest near Cisco Grove, California. In the fall of 1964, an event much stranger than fiction took place in the ruggedly scenic foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Tahoe National Forest. Into this remote wilderness stepped 26-year-old Donald Shrum, who planned to enjoy a relaxing weekend hunting deer with his bow and arrows. As he entered the forest, joking and laughing with his two hunting buddies, little did Shrum suspect that shortly he would be locked in the midst of a terrifying 12-hour struggle with alien forces. Armed only with his wits and one of mankind's most primitive weapons, Shrum expended every ounce of his strength in an all-night battle against invaders that seemed bent on overtaking him and carrying him away to a fate worse than death.

This is the story that the world has been waiting for decades to hear. Because he worked for a company that made missiles for the U.S. military, the eyewitness never revealed his true identity in connection with his UFO encounter until now. This is first and only fully authorized account ever written about this astonishing UFO incident. This UFO case was called "the most spectacular report we have examined" by Coral Lorenzen of the Aerial Phenomenon Investigation Committee (APRO). Paul Cerny of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) said, "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this incident is factual and authentic. I have spent considerable time plus many visits with the main witness, and along with the testimony of the other witnesses, I can rule out any possibility of a hoax."

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, just the facts December 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
This book certainly is comprehensive and goes over every detail of the Donald Shrum case a few times over. Nothing is left to the imagination, as it should be with a book like this. A narrative of the case is given, then a transcript of an interview with Donald Shrum in 1965 (less than a year after the incident), followed by a report written by UFO researcher Paul Cerny after he interviewed Donald Shrum. It then concludes with other robot-related UFO cases over the years.

Not a book written for entertainment purposes, this is written for anyone who wants every detail about the Donald Shrum case, you are left to make up your own mind about it in the end. The book doesn't try to convince you the story is true, it just lays out the facts. I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to UFOs (which is different from a non-believer), but this case is probably the most convincing I have ever read. Its pretty much how I imagine a close encounter would unfold if it really happened. Donald Shrum seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy and the fact that it took 47 years for a book with this much detail to come out only convinces me further that there may be something to this. I'm not saying you'll be convinced without a doubt that aliens visit Earth on a regular basis, but any open-minded person should walk away with the belief that there must be something to this story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Alien Encounter? April 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I belong to a ufology group and at our monthly meeting we like to have several topics of discussion. One of the upcoming meetings is to feature book reviews of two books selected by the group. Aliens in the Forrest was selected based on the narrative describing a hunters separation from two buddies and his subsequent encounter with aliens. Armed only with a bow and his wits he was able to hold off the aliens during this twelve hour encounter.

Having been a hunter when I was younger, I could identify with Shrum's predicament when he was separated from his hunting buddies. I could also visualize the terror he experienced during his encounter. Unfortunately the authors did not create the images in my mind; it was my own experiences and imagination. As a previous reviewer stated the accounts were also repeated several times in what appeared to be a way to fill more pages.

If the event did occur as stated, the authors could have either shortened to book or added additional research and references such as other events in the region.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good narrative. January 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
On the plus side, this is probably the one (and only) eye-witness-blessed guide to "The Cisco Grove UFO Encounter" and is precisely why I purchased the book. Having seen a few UFOs myself and experienced a few "close encounters" as well, I don't have a problem believing the reality of the incident.

Some editorial cons:

* Repetitive (filler?) text and pictures, maps and drawings. E.g., How many low-resolution pictures of the "bow" described in the incident do I need to see? Do I really need to see more than one picture/drawing of the "tree" that the incident took place in, or the robots, etc.?

* Speculative text. For example, the authors spend a page or so of the book debating about the worldly makeup of the "knock-out" gas mentioned in the narrative (i.e. "nitrogen, argon, [or] helium[?]"). Really? They are writing about UFOs, aliens, and robots that are clearly non-terrestrial and have highly advanced ET technology and they are speculating which Earth-based gas it might have been made out of?

Finally, besides considering why someone would think being in a tree would protect you from tree-climbing bears, I wonder that instead of the witness spending years in "emotional terror" of the situation described in the book, it might instead have been a "spiritual awakening" moment, where you are gifted with the knowledge that we are ABSOLUTELY not alone in this Universe and all that such knowledge implies. Unfortunately, the book only brings forth Mr. Shrum's negative aspects of the encounter and we are not given any real insight into any positive (if any) changes that incident may have brought into Shrum's life.

After all, any human who goes into a forest (or crosses the street) runs the risk of being shot, abducted, or killed -- but very few of us are given an opportunity to meet ETs face-to-face, and it is up to us to see the experience, and how it affects our life, as Negative or Positive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incredible story, enjoyable despite clumsy writing August 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
If you are a true student of Ufology, this book will be a fascinating addition to your collection. I give the authors great credit for not only reintroducing to the public a sensational case of UFO/alien encounter, but setting the record straight about a story that has been much maligned and misreported over the years.

Even UFO-lit legends such as John Keel (The Mothman Prophesies) botched the story, as did other high-profile UFO investigation groups, according to the authors.

The authors also claim to be the first to identify the key experiencer in what is certainly among the most amazing UFO confrontations in history. California man, Donald Shrum, has not only come forward to tell his tale, but also provides photos and sketches of an event that forever changed his life.

The events took place in 1964 in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada mountains when Shrum was 26 years old. He was 73 when he sat down with the authors to tell his story. It's a frightening saga indeed! Is the story authentic and true? For what it's worth, I'm satisfied that it is.

Another terrific aspect of the book is the engaging artwork of illustrator Neil Riebe, from the beautifully imagined front cover to the pen-and-ink drawings inside which gave me a kind of nostalgic remembrance of the kind of UFO art one used to see in mainstream magazines from the `60s -- such as SAGA, TRUE, REAL, ARGOSY and MAN'S WORLD.

The books fails to get a five-star rating from me, however, because the writing is clumsy, at best. The rendering of the information is repetitive in a way that makes it seem like Noe Torres and Ruben Uriarte realized they didn't have enough information for a full book-length manuscript, and so they padded wherever they could.
