Review

Budd Hopkins Dr. Roger Leir has finally and dramatically laid his cards on the table. His carefully documented surgical removal of possible alien implants from individuals reporting UFO abductions can no longer be ignored. It may very well turn out to be an event of extraordinary importance. At the very least, The Aliens and the Scalpel should alert the scientific community to something skeptics have long denied: the existence of testable physical evidence. Thus it is my hope that the book will have an even wider readership among physical scientists than among those of us already persuaded by the manytypes of evidence supporting the reality of UFO abductions. -- abduction researcher and author of Missing Time, Intruders, and Witnessed

Dr. Kenneth Ring An engrossing and compelling account of the research for hard evidence of extraterrestrial involvement in human affairs--and bodies. If Leir's evidence means what he thinks it does, it has soul-shattering cosmological and religious implications. In any event, _Aliens and the Scalpel_ deserves careful consideration from scientists and lay persons alike who, like Leir, are drawn to seek out the physical traces apparently left behind, like so many tantalizing clues, by the elusive phenomenon we all seek to understand--UFOs. -- Dr. Kenneth Ring, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Connecticut

MUFON Journal Of the many UFO books being published these days, this one should be on your "must buy" list. As Budd Hopkins notes, Dr. Leir's "carefully documented surgical removal of possible alien implants from individuals reporting UFO abductions can no longer be ignored."

While the book does not include much information on the implants themselves that has not already been covered in the MUFON Journal, it does provide the background needed in order to more properly judge and understand Dr. Leir's important work.

This is, in fact, as much a story about Dr. Leir as it is about implant removal surgery. The good doctor has a talent for writing which is detailed, perceptive, introspective, informative, and just plain enjoyable to read. Granted, there is too much detail about unimportant things at times, but even this tells us something about Dr. Leir. (His article in this issue of the Journal provides a good sample of his writing style.)

I have never met Dr. Leir, nor even talked with him by phone, so my entire impression of him has come from his writings. He comes across as an honest, sincere, genuinely nice individual. He reveals things about himself that are important in judging who he is and what he is doing, but which will probably not endear him to the average mainstream scientist. I refer to such revelations as his near-death experiences, dream/encounter with an ET, and his conclusion that aliens are currently manipulating human genetics. Unfortunately, these types of things give mainstream scientists an easy excuse to write him off without investigating what he has done.

Another problem Dr. Leir has with credibility is his close association with Derrel Sims, who serves as partner, advisor, coordinator, hypnoanesthesiologist, and personal friend. Rightly or wrongly, justly or unjustly, Sims is not held in high regard by a large number of ufologists, much less the scientific community. Dr. Leir, for example, receives invitations to speak before groups which refuse to invite Sims. This is frustrating to Dr. Leir, who feels that Sims, who he met three years ago, is a legitimate and important partner in their organization, the Fund for Interactive Research in Space Technology (F.I.R.S.T.). Is the UFO community being unreasonable in regard to Sims, or is Dr. Leir being taken for a ride by his charismatic partner? Time, as they say, will tell.

Also of little help in establishing credibility is the association of Sims and Dr. Leir with a piece of material which supposedly came from a UFO crash at Roswell. Although Dr. Russell VernonClark, then with the University of California, San Diego, supposedly verified that the material contained extraterrestrial isotopes and, in Dr. Leir's words, "was not made on this Earth," a great deal of confusion and controversy surrounds this item, as Dr. Leir notes in his book. He and Sims have also had limited association with Santilli's alleged "alien autopsy" film. This unnecessary and ill-advised involvement with high-profile-but highly questionable-"finds" can only detract from needed credibility for the implant removal project. This is a shame, because the implant removal surgery itself is reasonably well documented and has at least provided something tangible that can be duplicated or refuted.

Another questionable relationship in the minds of some ufologists is the association of Dr. Leir with Robert Bigelow, The Bigelow Foundation, and Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS). The mutual endeavors of Dr. Leir and Bigelow are discussed in the book, and seem to be simply a matter of Dr. Leir going where the research money is. The most frequent complaint about Bigelow is that he gathers information, but will not share it.

Ironically, Dr. Leir notes that Bigelow wanted to release some of the scientific data regarding metallurgy tests on the implants to the MUFON Journal early on, but Dr. Leir-who has a positive relationship with MUFON-asked him not to do this. "The research was not complete," explains Dr. Leir, "and I did not want to be in a position of being forced into premature conclusions. Another reason was that I wanted to personally write an article for the Journal that would not only present the findings, but also the background on the research itself. The article finally appeared in the April 1996 issue, and it was widely read and commented on."

Also of interest is the fact that Leir's book was published under the auspices of The Bigelow Foundation and NIDS, so apparently Bigelow is not hoarding all the information which he has helped obtain through his research grants.

Political issues aside, Dr. Leir provides a blow-by-blow, extremely detailed account of how he got involved with urology, his work with the Santa Barbara/Ventura MUFON group, personal UFO-related experiences, becoming acquainted with Sims and Strieber setting up the implant surgeries, performing the surgeries, frustrations with getting the removed materials tested, and continued problems in obtaining funding.

Color and black & white photos are included, as are actual reports on testing the removed material by various labs. An index would have been a nice addition, but considering that Dr. Leir finished the book in August, and it was published in November, there probably was not enough time to compile an index.

The biggest question left unanswered is what these implants are supposed to do, assuming they were placed by aliens. While the materials removed are very unusual in many ways, there is nothing like transistors or computer chips visible. While some are very much alike, some are quite different.

Dr. Leir is as puzzled as anyone else, concluding, "It would seem that the recovered items are structured objects that serve an as-yet undetermined purpose." Even so, he says that "most of the metallurgical analysis indicates that the structure of these objects has an extraterrestrial origin. The composition of the objects includes metals whose isotopic ratios are clearly not from Earth. Moreover, the form of these objects is clearly engineered and manufactured with precision rather than being a naturally occurring form. If these scientifically derived results are not disproven by subsequent analysis, then we can firmly conclude that some individuals with alien abduction histories have artificially manufactured objects in their bodies of a demonstrably extraterrestrial origin. In short, we now have the 'smoking gun' of ufology-hard, physical, scientific evidence of a continuing alien presence."

(As an aside, one could ask why implants-or even UFOs would necessarily have to be made of materials from beyond the Earth. Do aliens have to carry everything with them from their home planet?)

What's next for Dr. Leir? "We look forward," he says, "to when we can arrange for the performance of surgical procedures in such countries as Brazil, England, Mexico, Japan, Ecuador, Australia, and Puerto Rico." He notes that Sims also has the rather ambitious "ultimate goal" of "actually capturing one or more of these elusive beings that are entering our environment."

Is this book the last word on surgical removal and testing of possible alien implants? Hopefully not. Dr. Leir and Sims have led the way. Now there is a need for respected professionals and organizations to carry out additional research to see if similar results are forthcoming, to analyze what is found, and, of course, to write books about it.

One can only hope they will be as interesting as this one. -- Dwight Connelly, MUFON Journal, December, 1998, No. 368, p. 19

NAPRA ReView "The evidence is here, so overwhelmingly powerful that a sane person cannot easily deny that it is real, and yet so disturbing and challenging that even the best of scientists have trouble facing the fearsome questions that its existence poses." -Whitley Strieber

These fearsome questions, which science has steadfastly resisted asking, include: Is it conceivable that aliens are capable of entering our homes, abducting us, and implanting objects into our bodies in a way that is nearly undetectable? The evidence is what appears to be the implants themselves-tiny metallic objects of mysterious composition, surgically removed from the bodies of individuals with alien abduction histories.

Eight such persons have undergone meticulously documented surgeries, and the foreign objects removed have been analyzed in double-blind studies by some of the nation's foremost research laboratories.

The results are fascinating, to say the least, and may indeed represent a watershed event in the evolution of our society's consciousness about the UFO phenomenon. NBC-TV filmed the eighth surgery last August, and has produced a documentary currently scheduled to air February 17 during sweeps week.

This book is the personal story of the doctor who performed the surgeries, and includes an eight-page section of detailed color photographs and two appendices of biological and metallurgical lab reports.

The case as presented is quite convincing, and should generate a good deal of controversy. If its claims are true, it poses far more challenging questions than it answers. -- NAPRA ReView, January 1999.

Raymond Fowler Dr. Leir is to be praised for pioneering research into the removal and analysis of suspected alien implants. Only peer review and acceptance separatehis findings from being the proverbial smoking gun of physical evidence for the UFO abduction phenomenon. -- Raymond Fowler, well-known UFO researcher, author of the Andreasson series and the Allagash Abductions

The Meta Research Bulletin We do not review most books we read favorably. But we reserve the limited space of the pages of the Meta Research Bulletin for reviews of those books that contain something paradigm-changing, yet well-documented and in accord with the principles of scientific method. Frankly, that such criteria would be met by a book on the subject matter of "alien implants" was, to put it mildly, unexpected.

This book is an easy read because it is done in the anecdotal style of a personal diary. The author takes us through the events in his life over the past three years, starting with his professional career as a friendly neighborhood foot doctor. He describes his evolution to his present status as the only surgeon to surgically remove implants from the bodies of individuals who claim to be alien abductees, then to have those implants analyzed by professional laboratories.

The story begins when our skeptical-but-open-minded doctor attended a UFO convention with a less-skeptical friend, and heard a presentation about unusual implants seen in X-rays in the bodies of people who claimed to have had a UFO abduction experience. He asked the logical question--Why hasn't someone removed and examined one of these implants? But surgery is expensive and the subjects unsure of its aftermath, so it had not yet been done. That led the author to volunteer his services to operate on, remove, and arrange for an analysis of the implant in the foot of one of the subjects. His offer was not only accepted, but was soon joined by a sponsor willing to pay travel expenses and a few other costs.

As arrangements reached the serious stage, the need for documentation and controls became evident if the results, whatever was found, were going to be credible to people inside and outside the UFO community. So the author enlisted the aid of another colleague so that another subject with a hand implant could be operated on the same day and the results compared. Procedures were videotaped and documented at every step. The story of the first operations makes fascinating reading, since the flavor of the events of that momentous day are recounted in welcome detail.

But as one might have predicted, many problems in this first effort were not anticipated and the documentation and taping were less than complete. For example, at the critical moment of removal of the first implant, all witnesses in the operating room crowded in to get a closer look. The videotape showed only the middle of the back of a witness. Such problems were corrected for later operations (eight objects have now been removed from seven subjects) where controls remained unbroken and proper scientific protocol was observed throughout.

The analyzing laboratories were given minimal information, such as "foreign object from foot lesion" or "soft tissue, adjacent to foreign body". The actual biopsy reports, pathology reports, and metallurgical analyses on laboratory letterhead are reproduced as appendices at the book's end. The surgery and lab reports led to several principal conclusions. (1) All eight implants actually removed, and others known to exist in other claimed abductees, are located on the left side of the subject's body.

(2) Almost all the specimens fluoresced under ultraviolet light. (3) All subjects displayed abnormal reactions to procaine local anesthetics. (4) The exterior skin showed no evidence of an entry wound that could have allowed the implant to gain entrance.

(5) The implants were encased in a hard membrane of unique composition that could not be cut with a surgical tool.

(6) The surrounding tissues were rich in nerve proprioceptors. The normal purpose of such receptors is to convey pressure, temperature, and contact information from surface tissues through the spinal cord to the muscles in the lower extremities. But the implants all came from deep tissues. No known purpose is served by such receptors in deep tissue.

(7) The tissue samples completely lacked visible microscopic inflammation. This is normally a medical impossibility, because any foreign body would inflame the surround tissues. It appears from this startling finding that the composition of the surrounding membrane holds the potential to provide a medical breakthrough that might prevent rejection of organ transplants in the future.

(8) The final conclusions concerned the composition of the implants themselves. Compositions varied, but aluminum, calcium, copper, and iron were common. One laboratory analyzed four samples, and concluded that two of them "show some isotopic ratios consistent with an extraterrestrial origin." When queried about what they meant by that, the lab had noted ratios not found on Earth, and assumed that the sample was from a meteorite. The author assures us that his subjects did not step on any meteorites. Nothing useful could be deduced about possible functionality of the implants, although a gauss meter registered off-scale for one of them. So what are we to make of this evidence? What I read in this book is evidence that cannot be dismissed by the criteria of scientific method. I, for one, will now be paying close attention to future developments. -- Tom van Flandern, The Meta Research Bulletin, Washington, DC January 1999

UFO Magazine: "NBC Special to Air Surgical Removal of Purported Implants Feb 17"

The problem of possible alien implants has been looked into by researchers Derrel Sims and Roger Leir, the latter of whom, a podiatrist, has helped perform surgeries to remove objects from patients who claim alien abduction. Author Whitley Strieber, who wrote the bestseller Communion and two subsequent books dealing with his own abduction story, was present during the initial series of surgeries performed by Leir/Sims in 1996. In his new book Confirmation, published earlier this year, Strieber discusses the results of these surgeries, including subsequent revelations regarding the implants.

Now, a new two-hour NBC special, due to air in February, will broadcast the most recent surgery performed by the Leir/Sims team this past August. Dr. Leir invited over 20 guests to witness the surgery as it transpired, arranging for a TV monitor to be set up in a waiting room located near the surgery room so the guests could get a clear, unobstructed view of the actual operation. There were two video cameras used to record the event; NBC had their own crew and Leir/Sims were also taping the proceedings.

The patient was Paul Dering (pseudonymn), a man of 45-plus years who had a foreign object lodged in his left thumb, which was discovered when he had his wrist X-rayed as a result of a skiing accident in 1990. An emergency room doctor showed him the X-ray, which revealed a tiny opaque object in his left thumb. Shocked by the X-ray, Dering had no idea how the object had become embedded into the flesh of his thumb, nor could he recall ever having injured his thumb or cut it to a degree that would have allowed such an object to insert itself. He had never had surgery on his thumb; no scar tissue was present and no unusual experience either from childhood or the military could account for the presence of this object which had now, for the first time, revealed itself on a piece of X-ray film.

When Dering consulted his local HMO, they told him they couldn't treat him, since the problem did not represent any kind of life-threatening situation. Dering accepted that explanation and decided not to pursue the matter further: nevertheless he was not able to forget the mysterious foreign object in his thumb.

A few years later, Paul attended a MUFON (Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network) meeting to hear a lecture by Dr. Leir, who described his previous work. With the assistance of his partner Sims and their surgical team, Dr. Leir had successfully removed foreign objects from the hands and feet of several patients.

About six weeks later, Dering made an appointment with Dr. Leir, who examined the X-rays and arranged to have additional ones taken, to make certain that the object was indeed still there and had not moved. Both sets of X-rays confirmed that some type of foreign object was embedded within the flesh of Dering's left thumb. -- UFO Magazine

Walter H. Andrus, Jr. Dr. Roger K. Leir is a pioneer in the surgical removal of what seem to be alien implants from humans report ing alien abduction experiences. Determining the purpose of these implants hinges upon microscopic analysis of the removed specimens. Medical doctors, surgeons, physicists and chemists who are part of the Mutual UFO Network's Board of Consultants are available to apply their expertise to the challenge of resolving this intriguing enigma. -- Walter H. Andrus, Jr., International Director, Mutual UFO Network, Inc.

Whitley Strieber, From the Preface: Sometimes the whole world knows when a historical figure makes his history. As often, though, people whose work is little known make history in the quiet of ordinary life. Dr. Roger Leir is such a historical figure. There will come a time when the extraordinary breakthrough that he has made is noted in every textbook, but right now most of the world still has no idea of what he did, or even that such a thing could be possible. -- Whitley Strieber, author of Communion, Transformation, Confirmation

From the Publisher

Sims confirmed that the "object" appeared similar to others the team had previously removed, and possibly had been implanted by an encounter with some type of alien.

At Dr. Leir's suggestion, Dering met with Sims several weeks later. Sims confirmed that the "object" appeared similar to others the team had previously removed, and possibly had been implanted by an encounter with some type of alien. Both Sims and Dr. Leir recommended surgery to remove the object.

Hearing this prognosis, Dering expressed a feeling of anger, hopelessness, fear and indignation that someone alien to our planet-or perhaps our own government- would implant a tracking device into his body. His personal feeling was, "It's a crime against humanity!" He immediately agreed to the surgery. Whatever it was, he wanted it out!

Details were worked out during the ensuing weeks. The surgery was to take place at a Simi Valley surgical center. A Dr. Ablemeiser (pseudonymn), a general surgeon and friend of Dr. Leir, would perform the operation. An NBC crew attended to get the event on tape.

The patient was brought into the surgery room. Sims, a hypnoanaesthesiologist, began his hypnotic procedure which would insure that Dering would feel no pain during any phase of the operation. A medical anesthetist, also present, administered a local anesthetic. A special X-ray machine called a "C" Arm was used during the procedure to pin-point the position of the object before its extraction. once the foreign object was located on the screen of the X-ray, Dr. Ablemeiser made an incision with his scalpel. The object was quickly located and extracted. Dr. Leir examined the object and informed his audience that it was "strikingly similar in appearance and size to several other objects" they had previously removed.

Resembling a cantaloupe seed, the tiny object was covered with a dark, grey shiny membranous tissue. It was placed in a vial containing the patient's own blood serum, sealed and dated. Several days later, a member of the NBC team arranged to have the vial transported by bonded courier to the University of Texas' division of Earth and Physical Sciences in San Antonio, Texas, where it was initially analyzed. According to Dr. Leir, the security precautions were necessary to prevent any contamination of the specimen and to protect the integrity of the entire procedure. All of these steps were recorded by the network TV cameras.

Paul Dering quickly recovered from the surgery. During the first two weeks after the operation, he experienced some pain and tenderness in his thumb, and the wound evidenced some difficulty in closing completely. When the final healing took place, the remaining scar was barely visible.

"The object will eventually be subjected to a variety of tests," Dr. Leir comments. "The results of first analysis reveal that the implant bears close resemblance to the other implants removed in the 1995 and 1996 surgeries."

Seven additional surgeries had been performed prior to the August 17 surgical removal on Dering. Three out of the eight patients turned out to have nearly identical, highly anomalous iron-alloy objects involved. Dr. Leir comments, "In all cases, ultra-hard, metallic, highly magnetic 'cores' were surrounded by an ultra-dense dark grey membrane which could not be cut with a brand new scalpel. We know this had a magnetic iron core that was polar, since we used a magnet to spin the object 360 degrees without touching it. This was recorded by the NBC camera. The membrane somehow prevented any sign of inflammation or rejection."

The team believes the objects are of "alien" origin. As Leir explains, "The two main reasons for considering the elements in these objects to be non-terrestrial in origin has to do with the comparison by the metallurgical scientists to meteorite fragments, and that the isotopic ratios of some of the elements are [too] far out of the...range [for them ]to be terrestrial in occurrence."

A complete accounting of all previous surgeries, including histories of some of the patients is available in a new book, The Aliens and the Scalpel, authored by Dr. Roger Leir and published by Granite Publishing, with sponsorship from The National Institute for Discovery Science and the Bigelow Foundation.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST EVIDENCE YET, February 20, 2000
This review is from: The Aliens and the Scalpel : Scientific Proof of Extraterrestrial Implants in Humans (New Millennium Library, V. 6) (Hardcover)
Although the evidence is not as convincing as Dr. Leir claims, this is the best evidence supporting the claims of alien abduction to date. Finding implants in poeple who have reson to believe that thye may hav ebeen abducted strengthenes the hypothesis of alien presence on this planet. Of course sceptics will not be happy. They have demanded extraordinary proof and they are beginning to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuinely interesting account., September 29, 1999
By A Customer
Even someone like me, who is an `open minded skeptic' on the UFO phenomenon, found this book a fascinating read. I liked the human angle of Dr. Lier's account; how he tackled the problems of persuing pioneering research with few resources of his own, and all the difficulties he faced along the way. I don't think anyone can have much doubt about the integrity of his work. But it's another issue as to whether he has indeed found hard scientific evidence for so called `alien implants' placed in the human body. I found the evidence presented was compelling, but still left room for doubt as to an `extraterrestrial' origin. Despite all the hard work Dr. Lier has done, I think there is still that `last mile' to go before this world will be convinced these are truly `other wordly' objects. But well done Dr. Lier for getting this far! (A minor niggle: I have the paperback version of this book, the technical reports published in the appendices are fuzzily printed and hard to read).

5.0 out of 5 stars news and a review, November 23, 2003

I'm thankful that a well respected professional has written this book which brought confirmation to me about a couple of things I was never sure about. This is very compelling material, & should be read by believers and skeptics alike. I will not divulge any material, except for the fact that I had read that The Blessed Mother Mary had said at the apparition site at Bayside, New York, many years ago, that satan has been given this world for the time being, and that he is able to manipulate the elements in it. She also said that these things we call 'U.F.O.s', they (across the veil of Heaven) call 'transports.' That they do not come from space. That they come from our deepest caves & our highest mountains & descend upon our earth from heights that make us think they come from space. Now interestingly enough, all the elements of the implants retrieved by the good doctor were found to be of natural origin; nothing extraterestrial about them whatsoever!! Tell me THAT isn't some amazing cross-referencing!! It makes me wonder if the abductees have any religious beliefs in Jesus, & as a result, the graces that would go with protecting them from such intruders. Think about it, but DO read this book!!
