Amazon.com Review

Every year games are made based on popular movies. But Aliens vs. Predator has the distinction of being based on not one but two movie licenses: the Aliens and Predator series. Within the game, as a first-person shooter, you'll have access to 40 individual levels in order to battle it out as an Alien, a Predator, or a Colonial Marine. As if it were three games in one, this leaves you faced with entirely different gameplay, as each type of creature has its own strengths and flaws.

Each species also has its own set of objectives. As a Colonial Marine whose base has been overrun, you'll use a plethora of weapons including a pulse rifle, minigun, flamethrower, and grenade launcher as you fight both to save your life and to find a way home. As a Predator, your goal is to rescue another Predator that the humans have captured. In the process, you'll use your wristblade, pistol, plasmacaster, and cloaking device to get as many human and alien trophies as you can. Playing as the Alien, your primary objective is basic survival, and while you won't have the same firepower as the other races, you'll be able to take advantage of your phenomenal speed.

The game has enough storyline to keep any gamer pleased. However, Aliens vs. Predator is not without flaws. While it boasts 10 multiplayer modes including cooperative and deathmatch play, Internet play is available only via Mplayer (http://www.mplayer.com), and lag can be a problem, as can getting into games at all. Also, the shipping game doesn't allow for midlevel saves, meaning that you can save a game only once a level has been completed. Fox Interactive, though, has since released a downloadable patch enabling players to save at will.

Aliens vs. Predator is a great game for fans of the various movies, but gamers will also love the game's excellent graphics and gory action-packed gameplay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scary, difficult and loads of fun!, November 27, 1999

This review is from: Aliens Versus Predator (CD-ROM)
Alien VS Predator is the best "Alien" game released to date (I was actually fond of Alien Trilogy) and has a lot going for it. You can play as a marine, alien or predator. Playing as the Alien is the easiest and is pretty difficult to master as first. You will need to climb on walls, learn to pounce, and sneak up on your targets. As the Predator, you will need to use your fast arsenal of weapons, visions and invisibility features to win. The scariest and most fun character is the marine. You will need to collect weapons, health and watch your back at all times. You never know when an Alien is around the corner. And if you see or hear a face hugger, you better start shooting or run for your life. If one gets you, you WILL jump from your seat! The only drawbacks is that the save game feature is lame (if you download the patch, otherwise, there isn't a save game feature,) and the game will give you extra levels at the end, ONLY if you beat the game at a higher difficulty. Other than that, if you like the Alien movies, get this! I give this title a B+.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmosphere baby, it's all about the atmosphere, December 14, 1999
This review is from: Aliens Versus Predator (CD-ROM)
There have been other games, especially Half Life, that lay claim to the title of "Most Advanced 3D Shooter", but none of them come close to the sheer terror of Aliens vs. Predator.

This game initially lacks an in-level save option (you have to download a patch for that) as well as any kind of a running narrative plot, or any between level cut-scenes for that matter. But what this game does, it does PERFECTLY. And that is to put you into the body of a Colonial Marine, a Predator, or one of the Aliens.

Either character allows you to literally step inside make believe and interact with locations that up until now you could only view in the movies. Locations like the LV-426 colony, or the inside of the derelict Alien spacecraft complete with the fossilized pilot.

The highlight of this game is the third level while playing as the Alien. It is basically a recreation of the first Alien movie, but from the Alien's point of view.

For fans of the Aliens or the Predator movies, this game is an absolute must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible and addictive, July 3, 2000
This review is from: Aliens Versus Predator (CD-ROM)
I have had this game for ages and it took me ages to get used to it. I started first with the alien which moves faster than anything I have seen in a game and can crawl up walls, hang from the ceiling and makes a nice crunching sound when you bite into your enemies heads.

The predator levels are easiest and if you are familiar with the movies you will know why. Amazing fire power and tools (just check out the disc and the grappling hooks)not to mention invisibility, zoom and four different vision modes. I would suggest that you start with this baby because the predator is one mean and resilient character.

The marines are helped by their motion trackers (so you can see where your enemies might be) and a startling array of weapons: pulse rifle, smart gun (which tracks your enemies), flame thrower, mini-gun (the jungle flattening one used in the Predator movie) and the awesome SARDAR rocket launcher. Great but you have to find them along with body armour and medikits. Beleive me you will need them.

There are loads of levels and the opportunity for bonuses. The strategies needed by each character are different and this leads to some great game playing oportunities.

There are also multiplayer and skirmish options. Multiplayer means you can play across a LAN or the net. A great chance to wup your mates. Skirmish mode provides you with little vignettes -opportunities to massacre or be massacred.

This is not a game for the faint-hearted. Eerie sound effects and gory deaths are everywhere (you are even encouraged to do head bites when an alien - for extra health).

I do not claim to be a games wizard and it has taken me a long time to go through the games (at training level - I still have to do it at realistic and Director's cut levels)!

Two tips: buy the guide - you will need it and download the patch so you can save games.
