The power supply is a bit awkward and bulky with the brick, but just tuck it under a desk and it's out of the way.

This thing is awesome, works great, and plays games beautifully, but only buy it if:
1) You want to get into PC gaming (obvious one)
2) You want something small and high tech
3) You don't want to build your own
4) You always wanted an alienware (there are other brands)

My few gripes:
1) Would have liked more usb ports in the front, maybe even a USB 3.0.
2) Would have liked a spot to put a SSD (this thing is small so asking for a second hard drive spot is a little too much but still :)!)
3) A bigger power supply would have been nice, I got the 330W but its still not enough to run higher end cards. This may change since NVIDIA is making their cards lower power.
4) It needs a better wireless card, but its not bad. (it gets about the same signal as my phone)

If you meet all of the above requirements, and don't mind those gripes that I pointed out you should get this, or wait for an ivy bridge refresh.

I received this system in the mail today. The PC is as advertised, fast and quiet. The tower is nicely sized, much smaller than others I've had in the past. One of the +'s for me in buying this system was the built in wireless access. When I received it and started up I was very surprised to see that I was getting 1 to 3 bars of connectivity even though a laptop sitting right beside it has 5. After doing some legwork in the forums, I find that this problem is consistent on this machine. The only solution offered in the forums is to buy a wifi stick. I had an extra from my old system and plugged it in and sure enough, 5 bars of connectivity.

Until Dell gets their act together and provides a valid wifi connection in this system, buyer beware.

So I bought this PC for my wife's dorm room while she's in Tech training. Naturally, I'm testing it out before I hand it over to her. All I can say is "wow". I couldn't believe how small this thing is. Seriously, it's almost identical in size to an X-Box 360. I have it hooked up to a 23in HP full HD monitor. Gaming on it is AWESOME. Handles SWTOR with ease. BF3 and MW3 are amazing on this machine. And the Bluray player will be great for the wife since she doesn't really have room for a full on TV and Bluray player and all the extras needed with that. I will say that it will need a graphics card upgrade in the near future, but the system is completely customizable, so replacing the graphics card won't be a problem. All in all, it's a great little PC. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a gaming PC that also wants to save space. Oh, and the color customization option for the PC lights is just fun. You can make it 3 different colors at once!

I purchased this machine on June 12th, 2012, after my Alienware Blackbird 002 bit the dust. I have been a lifetime Dell customer, until now.

The PC arrived a few days after ordering and out of the box it looked and felt great. My machine ran quite well, except for one problem - the CPU fan ran at maximum speed all of the time from the moment I turned the machine on until I turned it off. So though it ran great, it was very loud due to this defect. It basically sounded like a server room, which was fine with headphones on but a pain for watching a movie (or trying to hear someone in another room). I called Alienware (Dell) customer service the next day.

To make a long story short, after 6 weeks, 20 hours on the phone, and two house calls by a Dell technician, the machine was still broken and dell refused to replace or exchange it. I returned it through Amazon for a full refund.

Caveat Emptor,

Scott T

As of 21 Jun 2012, the company is still shipping this outstanding computer with a faulty wireless card. After the system arrived I had to run out and purchase a wireless stick (thank you reviewer J. Martin). Worked like a charm, but still unacceptable. Currently on the Dell support site there is a fix in the forums (pg 17) for a service provider to come install a new wireless card. Will update post after visit.

Thank you providing feedback for the Dell Alienware X51. As you mentioned, we have provided a solution for the wireless connectivity concern. We will definitely send out a technician for customers who need to replace their 0X5MG wireless antenna with the new VRHN0 wireless antenna kit. Please email our experts as AWCC-Resolution_experts@dell.com
This email should include:

Updated Aug 17: Rating raised from 2 stars to 3 stars based on offer from Dell Service to correct the antenna issue in comment to this review. Will adjust rating further based on my experience after the repair.

I purchased and have two X51's for my kids gaming. One is an I5 and the other is an I7, with different video cards in each.

Both units have the same problem that is widely reported in forums on the internet - so do your research and buyer beware.

The issue is that the wireless internet connection has some sort of design flaw that results in frequent dropouts and weak signals. Wireless signal dropouts while gaming online equals massive unhappiness for my kids. Dell's response is that this is a known issue and their only solution is to bypass the internal wireless and plug an external wireless USB dongle in, which they offered to send me.

So if you're planning on using the wireless feature be aware that Dell's design is flawed and they haven't figured out a way to make their customers whole other than a jury rigged external USB plug in solution. If you are able to plug directly into an ethernet cable, or don't care about using an external dongle then everything otherwise works as you'd expect.

As for me, I need the wireless and want it to work like it was advertised. I declined the offer of a dongle and will await a real solution to this design flaw.

I waited more than 30 days to call about this issue, otherwise I would have sent the units back to Dell until they figured out how to deliver the product specs that they promised.

I am a long time Dell customer going back to the late 80's when I bought a PC-AT, and have owned many, many Dell's since then (and have 7 of them running in my house today).
