3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sinister, but just OK
I bought this CD after a quick sampling at a used CD store in Brazil. The vocal harmonies are great, some fun lyrics, but the songwriting isn't really 100%.

The main theme of the album is kind of a little girl, Alice In Wonderland fantasy with an edge. Lot of mentions of "The Big Bad Wolf" or "Him". The first 4 tracks really set the tone:
"Irresistable"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb, December 10, 2001
This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
This stunningly superb debut album received various degrees of critical acclaim upon its release in Britain - some loved it, and some hated it. I am from the former. The band consists of two girls, Karen and Shelley Poole (daughters of Brian Poole from The Tremolos), who write all of their own music along with their brother. So you see, they're not like most pop music. Said to influence the early 90's band, Shampoo, Alisha's Attic have constantly reinvented themselves.

The first of three studio albums (plus three B-Sides and Rarities albums), it is partly influenced by a kind of Alanis Morisette mentality. The majority of songs here are about relationships busting up or in the flame of passion. Such intense emotions on each song makes each track spectacular. The stand-out track would probably have to be 'I Am, I Feel', their first single, although it's always a good sign when album tracks such as 'White Room' and 'I Won't Miss You' are just as good as the singles. At times it can be a very bizarre album - such as the hilarious 'Personality Lines', a skit on help-lines - but it all blends together perfectly to create an image of what is really the greatest band to have come out of Britain in ages.

And one other thing, I met Karen in London, and she's lovely :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible. IF you like that kind of thing., August 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
I am a self-confessed Alisha's Attic addict. But I do try to review CDs as honestly as I can. If you listen to a lot of pop music, but have never heard Alisha's Attic, the best way to describe their music is "different". If you're not used to them they may indeed sound almost strange at first. There are 13 tracks on this CD, of which 10 are normal-length songs, one is much shorter and two are under a minute. The two short ones are not particularly good and I almost always skip them; the rest are excellent indeed. I particularly enjoyed Air We Breathe.

Alisha's Attic have such a distinctive style that once you've heard this album you will be able to recognise them on the radio even if it's a new release you've never heard before. As I write this, everyone has given them 5 stars, and that is a true representation of the quality of this CD. Chances are, if you like any of it you'll love all of it, which is why all the reviews have been so good. However, in the interests of fair reviewing, I suggest you listen to the sound clips first to make sure you like this stuff... because it's certainly not like anything you've heard before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spirited, Spiritual, Spunky!, December 9, 1999
This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
I heard a 10-second clip of "I am, I feel" on some awards show featuring international artists, and it was enough for me to buy the CD. Obsessive? Maybe, but I'm like that. Alisha's Attic is perhaps the most original, most fun band I've heard in a long time. "I am, I feel" just makes you want to dance, and their angelic "Air We Breathe" totally uplifts you. I never regretted buying Alisha's Attic - I still listen to it all the time. The best way to describe it is maybe a blend of Heart, Alanis Morissette, and Blondie, but they're really all their own. Try it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An imaginative and world-beating debut, May 5, 1999

This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
This sadly very underrated album should be a part of every music collection. The exploration of various styles and instruments in the songs on this album boils down to a very enjoyable and highly listenable collection. Two classics on the album which are pure perfection are the non-single tracks "White Room" and the original version of "Air We Breathe". This is one desert-island disc you'd never tire of. Buy it now.

This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after a quick sampling at a used CD store in Brazil. The vocal harmonies are great, some fun lyrics, but the songwriting isn't really 100%.

The main theme of the album is kind of a little girl, Alice In Wonderland fantasy with an edge. Lot of mentions of "The Big Bad Wolf" or "Him". The first 4 tracks really set the tone:
"Irresistable" introduces to the power of the girls' unique vocals that kind of sound like The Cranberries meet the Cardigans.
"Intense" is definitely the stand out track, with its in your face harmonies and heavy synths.
"I Am, I Feel" is a fun girl power song, where they sing about getting revenge on a guy who treats them bad.
"Alisha Rules the World" is the title track & has a trippy, but catchy hook.

The rest of the album just meanders off into silliness, it's not a great album overall-but I haven't gotten rid of it yet, so that's saying something.

5.0 out of 5 stars they're from Britain and they're definately way cool, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Alisha Rules the World (Audio CD)
All of their songs include quirky phrases with a deeper meaning than you find today in most music. They aren't trying to be phonies or tell you how to live your life. On this album, there's a different song for every feeling you can expirience. "Intense", "Adore You", "The Golden Rule" are some of the best.
