4.0 out of 5 stars Alisha's first effort... Great club record!, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
I love Alisha! I'm a really big fan of hers, and I just recently got all of her CDs (including this one!) and it's such a shame that she wasn't more successful. She was successful enough to launch major record deals after this Vanguard release (thanks to producer/engineer Mark Berry), but I don't think she ever got the promotion she deserved! Here's a track by track review of "ALISHA"

"All Night Passion" - This is a good single. It's very dancey and 80s club friendly. I REALLY love Alisha's voice on this song because her vocal runs are great! Her voice really flys on this song!

"Stargazing" - One of my personal favorites. Good poppy, dance song. I love the chorus : "While I'm waiting I'll be stargazing / On a lonely night / So lonely / Wish you were holding me tight" It's got a great melody to it and the lyrics are cool.

"Baby Talk" - LOVE this one! It hit #1 on the Dance charts for a reason! Classic Alisha song. Great club song! Still awesome to listen to today! I know alot of people who compare this track to a Madonna-style track. So if you like Madonna's 80s song, you'll love this one!

"Too Turned On" - MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! Awesome awesome song! Alisha's vocals are a little rougher on this song, and I think it's a great song for her voice! Shows good vocal power on this song too! I love how her voice sounds on the key change (in the last sung chorus).

"Boys Will Be Boys" - Cute little song. Not really clubby, just kind of a obscure album-cut. It's a bit older sounding. The chorus is catchy!

"One Little Lie" - This is a good, mellower song from Alisha. I don't think the album would have been complete without it. This song was originally sung by Kirsty MacColl :)

OVERALL : Pretty good. My only complaints (yes I know this has been said about 5 times now LOL but yes) this is a low transfer to CD. You really do have to crank it to listen to the song at a loud level (WARNING!! If you're playing this in your car loudly and you're switching back to radio TURN THE VOLUME DOWN or you will get a really LOUD suprise!! LOL) But it's not really that bothersome in the listening of it. I also wish this wasn't DANCE MIXES. I wish they were single edits, because alot of the time I find myself fast-forwarding through many bars/solos of music and no words and the really long intros. Only BOYS WILL BE BOYS and ONE LITTLE LIE are normal mixes. The rest are extended. Her voice is good on this album, but her later stuff definitely shows maturity in her voice. But I definitely recommend this CD! Look at Alisha's other titles : "Nightwalkin'" (1987 RCA Records) and "Bounce Back" (1990 MCA Records). Also the singles "Wherever The Rhythm Takes Me" (1996 Critique Records) and "You Wanna Be A Star (Superstar)" (1999 Jellybean Records)

5.0 out of 5 stars Alisha voice is power packed, December 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
Alisha debut album is excellent and it showcases her power packed voice. Of her three US cds to date this one is the very best. The cd houses 2 versions of "All night Passion" as well as other big hits like "Too turned on ". A big artist among the dance club scene in the mid 80's, Alisha has not had a new release since 1990. This still remains her best cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars "All Night Passion" w/ ALISHA, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
I first heard of Alisha on a mix tape(and yes we called them mixed tapes back then, ha,ha). I went out and bought her 12" of "All Night Passion" three years after it's release(1986). To this day, I'm still listening to that same ole 12" on my Spirit of St. Louis stereo and it still sounds great. I've taken care of all of my records. I wish Vanguard/Tarbox records if they still exist should put Alisha's 12" remixes on C.d.'s(I hope one of you guys sees this and realize there's a demand);or better yet Alisha sees this and decides to go on a tour.
I bought this album on cassette tape around 1989 because I couldn't find it on c.d. I regret loaning out the tape to someone and never got it back 'round 1992-$%#*! Anyway, Alisha had a variation in tone of voice and singing style than that of Madonna, Stacey Q or even that of Regina. All of these girls possessed their own unique sound and style. Their songs that made them a household name(ahh, in this case a "clubhouse" name), seemed to be tailored made for them.
Alisha followed this up with "Bounce Back" in 1990. I saw it on display at the Coconuts store where I bought all of my 12" records. I decided to purchase it because I liked "All Night" so much even though I haven't heard "Bounce" and was pleasantly surprised by it's catchiness. A few months down the line a couple of Chicago's local top 40 stations was playing "Bounce". I wish they would've played at least "All Night Passion" or "Baby Talk" since "Bounce" became a moderate hit on the radio. However, there was several college/independent radio stations that played "underground" or club hits, so I listened to them. I hated the fact that in order for a song to receive attention it has to hit the top 100 chart and by the time it hits the top 40 it's old and "played" out! Then the radio stations decide to play it when everyone is so sick of the song. And it's still happening today! So what I'm Trying to say without sounding to redundant, is that a great club song stays at the club level and never gets radio airplay because the numbers aren't there- chartwise that is.
I recommend this and support all of your club/dance artist.
Peace, Julius-Allan

5.0 out of 5 stars ALISHA paved the way for Mariah, Britney, Christina, etc..., June 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
ALISHA is a true dance music pioneer. At only age 15, "All Night Passion" became a worldwide smash, thrusting Alisha into the spotlight with people like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Culture Club. The only difference was that ALISHA was only a teenager, while the other artists were not. At that time, young teens ruling the airwaves was not common. Alisha enabled young people to realize that it was possible to have a recording career at a young age. Young people identified with her, but what seperates ALISHA from other female artists, is that ALISHA's voice has a certain unexplainable OOMPH that is still lacking in superstar acts like Madonna, Mariah and Britney Spears. For me, ALISHA's debut album is a staple. I can't live without it! This is the best dance album from beginning to end, hands down!ALISHA's voice is golden, and to date, the only voice that sends chills down my spine!
Every track on this album is catchy, delivered with "passion" and is guaranteed to make you dance your a** off! After the release of ALISHA's debut album, it was interesting to see the sudden crop of young artists coming out of the woodworks, such as Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and now Britney Spears, Mandy Moore and Christina Aguilera. And I'd bet my bottom dollar that MARIAH CAREY listened to Alisha's album as a teenager until the vinyl got warped! Now that it's on CD, ALISHA's debut album can be enjoyed forever by future generations to come. I more than highly recommend this cd for everyone...even rock fans. In the 80s everyone I knew had ALISHA's album, now it's your turn! It's a must-have!

If you are a big disco dance fan, then this collection is for you. There are only 7 tracks, which includes an extended track of All Night Passion. 7 must be Alisha's lucky number because this is still one of the hippest dance collections available, even by today's standards. Ignore the poor sound quality on some tracks...the transfer to CD was awful, but the pulse is still there.

Hot, Hot, Red Hot!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE late-80's Dance-pop!!!, August 24, 2001
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
This album is one of my all time favourites!!! Dance hits from end-to-end! "Too Turned On" was one of the most played and most loved dance songs of the late 80's in the NYC area. The album lives up to that quality...3 Hits..."All Night Passion" "Too Turned On" and "Baby Talk"...this album is all that late 80's dance pop was...every song is uptempo and danceable...I love "One Little Lie" a 'cute' Kirsty MacColl song...also done by Frida (of ABBA) on her "Shine" album. If you like Lisa Lisa or early 80's Madonna...you'll LOVE this...trust me.....

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the HOTTEST Club/Dance CDs around...Simply Excellent!, July 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Alisha (Audio CD)
Alisha's 1986 debut album houses her best tracks, "All Night Passion," "Too Turned On," "Baby Talk," and "Stargazing." It is interesting to note that this album was 2 years in the making; All Night Passion reached #3 on the club charts in April 1984, Too Turned on #6 in September 1985, Baby Talk #1 in March 1986, and Stargazing #16 in June 1986.P>As the other reviewers have said before me, "Alisha" IS a low grade CD transfer, and it is really unfortunate. You do have to raise the volume on all the tracks to listen to them at a normal level, and Too Turned On and All Night Passion (extended dance version) are at a slightly lower quality than the other tracks. Also, the latter gets inexpilcably louder towards the end of the song, hy, I don't know. Additionally, this CD is advertised as "contains extended dance versions" - while I enjoy the tracks on Alisha, I wish the CD would just have the regular versions (preferably radio edits) of the songs, as they can get a tad lengthy. However, my grips about the CD doesn't make it bad; it certainly remains excellent despite some of the minor flaws.<...

All in all, pick this one up. I'm positive you won't be disappointed!!!

These are her hits. Quite frankly, they were great like the other reviewers state. I am a Mobile Disc Jockey in NYC area and the only problem that I have is that this CD was burned with a LOW Volume. I have equipment to correct that, but most people don't. You will have to turn the volume up high just to listen to it at a moderate level.
