Amazon.com Hands-On Review

The Baby Alive Learns to Potty doll from Hasbro really eats, drinks, and uses the potty. With its blinking eyes, talking mouth, and ability to "eat" and "digest" its food, this doll provides interactive and imaginative fun for children ages 3 and up.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Innovative, interactive doll talks, really "eats" and uses the potty

The Bad: Parents need to be on hand during play to clean up messes

In a Nutshell: Baby Alive will ask for food, really eat, and really learn to uses her potty

Ages: 3 and up

Doll Really Talks and Eats!
This version of Baby Alive is a toddler, just the right age for potty training. She has cartoonish, oversized eyes and a head of curly hair, and comes dressed in a bib and a removable dress. Press the button on her bracelet to turn her on; she'll "wake up" and say "I Love You Mommy." When she talks, her eyes blink and her mouth moves in sync with her words. When she says "I'm hungry," that's the cue to feed her.

The doll comes with a bowl and two baby food mixes. Mix one baby food packet with water and feed it to her with the included spoon. She'll "chew," ask for more, and say the food is yummy. She needs water, too: she can drink real water from the included baby bottle.

Potty Training Time
After she's done eating, the doll will say she has to go potty. Sit her on the included toilet, and she will really go. But watch out: if you wait too long, the doll will say, "Uh, oh, I had an accident," and she'll go in her diaper -- or all over you, if you're not careful! She comes with an extra diaper and wipes for cleaning and changing.

Baby Alive's most unique feature is that she gets better at using the potty after every feeding session: after the second session, she will ask to use the potty twice before going in her diaper, and after the third feeding, she'll ask to go three times before having an accident, and so on until the fifth feeding. (The doll's potty training feature can be reset, so your child can "teach" her to use the potty over and over again.)

Interactive Role-Playing Fun
While some talking toys simply recite phrases at children, Baby Alive takes it a step further by offering the opportunity for interaction. As well as asking for food and using the potty, she also will ask your child to sing songs, play, or give her a hug -- each of which invites a response. We particularly like that her interactive features allow for role-playing fun, which is a vital part of a young child's development.

However, because of the potential for mess, this is not a toy for independent play, especially for younger children, and especially if you'd like your house to stay tidy. So parents and caregivers need to be on hand -- and they need to be prepared to clean up some messes! The doll also requires cleaning between feedings and potty sessions to keep it working properly.

The doll comes with two food pouches and an extra diaper, but you'll definitely want to stock up on more before your child begins to play because they get used up very quickly! Accessories are available for separate purchase.

What's in the Box
Baby Alive doll (batteries included) with bib, dress and diaper; bowl, spoon, two baby food packets, water bottle, baby wipes, two baby food packets, extra diaper

Product Description

Playing mommy is even more realistic with this sweet baby doll. Press the doll?s bracelet to wake her up. Mix her special food and feed her, using her bowl and spoon ? she?ll chew her food and even drink from her bottle, then tell you how much she likes it! And since she?s potty training, she?ll also let you know when she needs to go. Better hurry, though! Put her on the potty and she?ll "pee" and "poop." But if you don?t get there in time, you might hear her say, "Oops, I had an accident!" Once you change baby?s messy diaper, she?ll be happy once again. Is that a yawn? Sounds like baby is sleepy. Cradle her in your arms or put her down for a nap.

The realistic baby doll encourages valuable, imaginative role-play for young children, while also helping to teach a sense of responsibility and good old-fashioned tender loving care!

Doll comes with potty, dress, two doll diapers, bottle with nipple and cap, bowl, spoon, two packets of doll food, bib and package of wipes. Requires 4 "AA" batteries, included.

I AM UTTERLY DISGUSTED! I am an AVID DOLL COLLECTOR and I buy as many dolls as I possibly can.
That is how I know that all of you complaining about the difficulty in finding (and the OUTRAGEOUS prices of!) the African American & Hispanic version of these dolls are absolutely SPOT ON!!!!!
I have been looking for/trying to buy the ethnic version of this and several other dolls and am soooooooooo frustrated at the lack of availabilty & the INSANE PRICE GOUGHING INVOLVED!
If you DO manage to FIND THE DOLL THE PRICE IS SO INSANELY HIGH THAT YOU JUST CAN'T AFFORD IT! And I am a grown-up (white) doll "collector" who doesn't neccesarily "need" these dolls. I can only IMAGINE THE FRUSTRATION LEVEL OF THE BLACK/HISPANIC PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS OUT THERE TRYING TO GET THESE DOLLS FOR THEIR CHILDREN/GRANDCHILDREN. I WOULD BE LIVID!!!!!!!!
SOMEONE REALLY NEEDS TO CALL THESE DOLL COMPANIES AND THE STORES THAT CARRY THESE DOLLS AND JUST REALLY GIVE THEM HELL!!!!!! I am thinking of doing just that this week! I mean really don't we have just as many African Americans in this country now as we do "white folks"? As a white person I am ASHAMED OF THIS. We can and should be doing so much better than this. When I find a doll I like I want it in every possible color and gender. But what do you ever get but a female white doll dressed in pink? We deserve SO MUCH MORE! I want The Afican American version, the hispanic version & then I want all 3 versions (white, AA & Hispanic in a BOY DOLL!) And the fact that it is so difficult to find and/or get these things is a sign to me that WE NEED CHANGE!!!!!! We got a change on our government. How about a change (FOR THE BETTER!) in the products that are available to our children? We NEED to hold these toy companies and stores ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE UNFAIR DISCREPANCIES! I have said so many times that "If I were in charge thinsg would be different!". Their would be much more VARIETY, more AVAILABILTY, and the prices would be REASONABLE AND FAIR!!!! DON'T STOP VOICING YOUR OPINION ON THIS MATTER. THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE NEED TO HEAR FROM US IF WE ARE EVER TO GET ANY CHANGE. I think that ALL VERSIONS OF THE DOLL SHOULD COST THE SAME PRICE AND ALL BE EQUALLY ACCESIBLE. And yes the doll itself is lovely and I highly reccomend it. But not at this price here. This is just INSANE. It is high time for a change. That's my opinion. Hope that someone with influence maybe reads this and TAKES A HINT!!!!! I GIVE 5 STARS FOR THE DOLL ITSELF. 0 STARS TO THE TOY COMPANIES & STORES FOR MAKING IT SO HARD TO GET AND 0 STARS FOR ANY AND ALL VENDORS TRYING TO RIP US OFF TO GET ONE. GOOD LORD IS THIS INSANE.

Totally disgusted!!! December 19, 2008
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I love Amazon and have been a faithful Prime customer for years. I am totally disgusted with the fact that someone (private seller/Amazon/whoever) is trying to make an extra buck off the ethnic dolls via amazon.com. I found this doll at Target locally here in Tampa for $40...that's right F-O-R-T-Y B-U-C-K-S!!! I checked their site first and it said they were available in 'Limited Availability'. I immediately ran to the store to find one left.

baby alive January 11, 2009
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I got this doll as a Christmas gift and she loves it. It will occassionally "wake up" in the middle of the night but no one is losing sleep. Be sure to have plenty of diapers or something to cover her behind because she will go quite often depending on how much she is fed. Overall, my cousin loves it and is quite happy with it.
