Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
With Alive! Kiss created one of the most exciting and essential live albums of all time. Its 1977 sequel, Alive II, failed to measure up for a variety of reasons--including, perversely, the inclusion of an album side of studio material--and it took the band 15 years to return to the well once again. Alive III holds up surprisingly well, though that may be due to reduced expectations for a band that was nearing the end of its "unmasked" period, performing without makeup and without original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Still, Kiss have always excelled onstage, whether through genuine inspiration or mere professionalism. Alive III rocks the house with a generous 16-song selection of material that cuts the chaff from their weaker mid-period studio albums and doesn't neglect fan favorites such as "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Deuce," "Heaven's on Fire," and "Detroit Rock City." --Daniel Durchholz

3.0 out of 5 stars Kiss - 'Alive III' (Mercury) , March 10, 2005
I give it 3 1/2 stars.A live CD that many of us never thought would see the light of day.'Alive III' was produced by long-time producer Eddie Kramer.A few old fans here and there might be a bit let down, but for the most part,'Alive III' is decent.Total of sixteen cuts, with a running time at 67:26 as there's just four early tunes here,"Deuce","Watchin' You","Detroit Rock City" and "Rock And Roll All Nite".That's okay.As for myself,I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the later material as well,"Unholy","Creatures Of The Night","Lick It Up" and "I Was Made For Loving You"(after all these years,I'm used to it anyway). No,'Alive III' isn't as great as the first 'Alive' record. But then again, did you really expect it to be?

3.0 out of 5 stars Has Its' Moments, But It Falls Flat... , October 11, 2004
By Chuck Potocki (Highland, Indiana) - See all my reviews
This really isn't up to par enough to be called "Alive III", but for what it is, it isn't too bad; it has its' moments. What ultimately makes this album fall a bit short of the mark is the sound quality; Eddie Kramer was enlisted again as the producer, since he produced the classics Alive I & II, but his production here is rather uneven. The crowd sounds were too loud and the explosions are even louder, which could possibly damage or blow your speakers at high volumes. Musically, Eric Singer's drums are flat and low in the mix, and Gene's bass is even lower at least half of the time. About the only exciting thing is Bruce Kulick's guitar playing; he really steps up and delivers some great leads, but that's about it.

Kiss was just going through the motions at this point and bowing to pressure to produce another live album; the previous years' "Revenge" was a strong comeback and return to form following the untimely death of Eric Carr in 1991, but this album was like taking a step or two backward. Kiss really should've waited 3 more years when Ace Frehley and Peter Criss returned for the 1996-1997 Reunion and recorded another Alive album from that tour; that at least would've been more true to form and memorable.

And don't even get me started about the "Alive IV Symphony" fiasco...
