Still Living Off ALIVE,
By The JuRK (Our Vast, Cultural Desert) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alive (Audio CD)
I had this double album back in high school when it came out in 1980--and I'm still listening to it.
I fell in love with the songs "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'" and "What A Fool Believes" (although Michael McDonald's version with the Doobies is still my favorite). "I'm Alright" was like a teen anthem then. "Love Has Come of Age" and "Keep the Fire" were songs of hope, and the live version of "Angelique" maintains a haunted sound that cuts even deeper all these years later. "Celebrate Me Home" made me appreciate family and friends back then. And brings tears to my eyes now all these years later. Thanks, Kenny.

Let the good times roll,

Excellent album. If you like Footloose or Danger zone only, don't buy it. For Loggins & Messina fans, also The Doobies. Warm, well balanced and good recording

This album always made me wish I'd been there in the audience during the taping. I was in high school when I bought this on vinyl. I practically wore it out. From the sweet and romantic Lennon/McCartney "Here, There, and Everywhere" to the classic and rockin' "I'm Alright", this album has everything. I used to turn off all the lights in my bedroom, watch the night sky from my window, and crank this album on my stereo until my mom told me to turn it down! I've since put the record in storage, with all my other old classic albums, and bought this on CD. It remains a favorite. Kenny Loggins made some wonderful recordings in years following this concert, including the Return to Pooh Corner music and all of his great movie hits. This is some of his core music and it's classic Loggins. The haunting musical arrangement of "Angelique" and the passionate "You Don't Know Me" are a couple of my favorites. I highly recommend this CD.

An Ear-opening Example of a Master Entertainer,

I saw Kenny Loggins live during this tour back in the 70's. I was a full-time guitarist and my roommate (a drummer) basically went along for the ride, because I talked him into it. I think he was expecting a lively little country-pop band, similar to Loggins and Messina. His mouth stayed open the whole concert and he has never stopped thanking me for talking him into it. I have seem many, many bands live over the last 30 years, but this was the most professionally done concert I have ever seen. Kenny Loggins is much more than just a musician. He is a very impressive stage presence and incredible vocalist. I have never seen anyone who has more natural talent than this man, and his band was just as impressive. Pop, jazz, blues, rock, country, folk.....you name it and they played it. The bass player George Hawkins, who played a fretless bass and sang background vocals and some lead, had a fantastic voice and sound. One guy played various wind instruments including flute, clarinet, saxaphone, and also accordion. It was just all around a great night of great music... a night I will never forget. If you've never heard Kenny Loggins live, then you've never heard kenny Loggins. I love this band and this choice of songs much better than his more recent live albums. I just wish this tour had been captured on VHS.

Slammin',
This review is from: Alive (Audio CD)
This recording was slammin' in 1980 and its still slammin' after all these years. It may well be the best live recording of all time. The odds of recording something this great aren't very high, but he did it. The whole thing rocks...trust me. Its an album for people who love music and for those of us who cherish the lost art of live performances. If you don't own a copy you should. And you can trust The Soul Diva baby...I know.

THE classic live album!,

I bought this album in 1980 as a kid who had already been selling high-end audio gear for two years. I need to thank Mr. Loggins because this live album made me lots of money as a kid. The better the equipment, the better the music. But this double album is im my opinion, THE perfect live album! None of the brashness and shrillness that you find on most live albums. From the first cut on disc one, "I Believe In Love" to the last cut on disc two, "Keep The Fire", this album captivates and gives you the true essence of Kenny Loggins live. I had been lucky enough to see Mr. Loggins live three times in my youth. But the most cherished moment I have was when the power went out in the middle of the concert at Las Vegas' Aladdin theatre (long since gone). It was a venue that seated 7,500. At this sold out show, when the power failed we all held up out lighters and lit the place up. Then Kenny Loggins sat on the edge of the stage with a guitar and no amplification. You could hear a pin drop. Kenny played for twenty minutes and held every soul there spell bound. Thank you Mr. Loggins. And if you have the chance to get this album, by all means do it. It will quickly become one of your favorites.
