Product Description

Alive in this Dream is a collection of eleven songs including the alt/pop anthem "Free"--which garnered medium and heavy rotations in New York and Boston college radio stations prior to the full-length CD release.

This second CD by singer/songwriter Lori Hawk is an introspective collection of stories delivered in a modern folk-rock style.

"Listening for You", the opening track on Alive in this Dream, is a Celtic-influenced ballad with Eastern undertones. "Princess Mary," a twist on the Mary Queen of Scots story, is laden with piano riffs and vocal acrobatics. The title song, "Alive" features dark keyboard orchestration, 12-string guitar, and a weave of vocals and harmonies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning., January 1, 2004
By
This review is from: Alive in this Dream (Audio CD)
I've been having a difficult time generating words to describe Alive In This Dream, even in a letter directly to Ms. Hawk. The pure emotion and depth of the music and lyrics are simply stunning. Ms. Hawk is also one of the finest vocalists I've heard in a long time. Cheers! ------ Kenneth L. 5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, July 11, 2003
This review is from: Alive in this Dream (Audio CD)
Lori grew up near Seattle, Washington, which is known to be an area that inspires a melancholy mood in winter and complete appreciation for life in the summer. This music reflects many moods.

After moving to California and forming a band called Strata, Lori's path led her across America to Washington, DC. Here she found solace in writing and recording the songs on this album. You can feel the influence of these locations in her music.

Her songs seem to draw beauty from the depths of your soul and open your heart to possibilities. They were written during a time in Lori's life when she was seeking an escape from her hectic daily existence.

The first song is an expression of longing on the surface, however on a deeper level it is really the key to unlocking the rest of the album.

Lori Hawk's voice permeates the darkness in the haunting "listening for you." In absolute longing, her voice echoes from deep within the caves of the heart and soul. It seems to move up and out and to the top of a mountain.

"Princess Mary" is almost playful until you actually read the words and contemplate the deeper meanings.

After the first two songs, fascinating lyrics start to weave through your mind like a river gently inviting you into deeper contemplation. You are immersed in each story as the almost living lyrics lead the rhythm in the songs.

While this is alternative, her music has a lyrical magic all of its own. There are definite interweaving of new age, modern folk, rock, Celtic and Eastern influences.

Lori's voice is free to dance within a world of keyboards, acoustic guitars, drums, Didjeridu, tar, riqq and buffalo drum. The music follows her and envelops her voice willingly on this musical pilgrimage.

"Alive in this Dream" is actually a collection of songs focusing on recurring themes and patterns. Lori came to a realization that people around her were going through similar struggles.

"Alive" was born during the realization that we often shield ourselves from the truth in a intellectual dance. Once you know this song was written after Lori watched a friend avoid a relationship she really wanted to have, it just opens up into story of love that seems inevitable. She paints images of letting someone walk away in the rain and the angst that follows.

You move from an ethereal trance of idealism to a realization of being awake in the dream of your own making, reality.

"Descending this morning from heaven to earth
The mist took me back remembering that cry
Asleep I let go of my life before birth
For today I return on wings from the sky." ~Today

Lori Hawk's creativity and poetic expression defies classification. Her voice is sensuous, clear and stunning in its power. Yet, in a whisper, her voice can change into a comforting delicate beauty that can slowly intoxicate you unlike any other music I've experienced. This is especially true in "As You Hold Me." Her lyrics are beyond compare. It has taken me weeks to see the deeper meanings and this fascinates me.

"For the Kings" has a surprisingly powerful moment of rhythm that bursts from the calm. Lori's voice seems to take off into an ecstatic dance across the Egyptian night sky. This seems to display her love for being unconfined by rigid structure.

"Oracle" is absolutely magical. "Hand to the Wall" seems to express Lori's love for the study of the ultimate nature of existence because she sings about how she is "feeling for the truth ahead."

I really have been listening to this CD for weeks and I'm rather addicted. I hope Lori has more albums in the making because her music is superior in quality and spirit.

"Alive in this Dream" is a lush collection of memories, longings, dreams, poetry and creative images of nature woven between pure ripples of sound.

Impressed beyond 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Alive" lives, May 31, 2003
This review is from: Alive in this Dream (Audio CD)
Welcome to a little world tinged with the supernatural. Make that more than tinged -- there's an unearthly tone to the entire "Alive in this Dream" album. With beautiful vocals and a haunting musical backdrop, this is a great album for those who like Sarah McLachlan and Clannad.

Among the songs is the softly pleading "Listening For You," the jazzier but still poignant "Princess Mary," the deeply moving and reminiscent "For The Kings," the faster and more passionate "Free," the truly haunting "Oracle" ("Cloaked in wisdom/eyes of a child/gazed upon the mysteries..."), and the utterly incredible, spine-tingling "Hand To The Wall" which sings of "echoes in the dark/2000 years dead/laughing and crying," the soaring love ballad "As You Hold Me" and others.

Hawk's vocals are rich and throaty, and in these songs she has plenty of opportunities to show that she's flexible as well. The music is equally rich, a fitting accompaniment, using acoustic and electric guitars, keyboard, drums, didjeridu. The result is a very subtle, resonant, flowing, different-with-every-song music somewhat reminiscent of Clannad.

The songwriting is definitely above average, and like the group Tea Party the songs make plenty of exotic, enticing mentions: The Valley of the Dead, oracles, dragonfly wings, 2000-year-old "echoes in the dark," fire in darkened rooms, and many others. At times, such as in "Listening For You" it reminded me a bit of free-form poetry. The overall mood it evokes is somewhat melancholy, but very beautifully so.

Fans of rich, haunting music and singing will undoubtedly find a prize in "Alive In This Dream." A mix of rock and new age, this is definitely a keeper.
