I have spent the last several days reading recipe and diet books in order to implement some new changes in our lives this coming year. We eat generally healthy, but I have been looking for new recipes and new ideas to try to improve our health even more. This has been one of my favorite books so far. The book starts out with a brief introduction to the pH levels in your body and why it is important to have a healthy pH balance. This information was helpful for me, as I have heard about pH levels but did not know anything about them. I found it interesting to know that having the right pH level can actually help prevent cancer and other diseases.
The book is very simple in the sense that it simply lists the top 101 alkaline foods, by category (fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, etc...). However, each item listed has a large amount of nutrition information about it, from what vitamins are contained in it to what it provides for your body besides vitamins. For example, I did not know that blackberries were a good source of fiber and also helped with tummy troubles, besides being packed with a lot of vitamins. Each food listed has more than one health benefit, and sometimes many.
I really love this book, and feel like it will work well with the other books I have read and the changes I am implementing in my family's diet. For every great recipe I find, I can look in this book to see what nutritional elements I am including, and use it to round out what we are missing in our regular diet. I am really excited about it!

This book is an easy read with information on the foods that help your body work more efficiently by keeping your pH levels normal. The authors have written several books on weight loss and eating for optimum health. I found it interesting in the descriptions that the origin of each food was given and what climate the food normally is found. For example, did you know that cantaloupes first came from an Italian village called Cantaloupe but are most popular in the United States. They are effective in reducing stress, reducing menstrual problems and reducing the risk of acquiring diabetes.
The authors say that you do not need to eat these foods all in the same day but over a period of two weeks. Included at the end of the short book is a video resource for the `6 Foods You Must Not Eat', of course, they are foods I eat, like margarine, enhanced water, orange juice, popcorn, yogurt and grain breads.
I recommend this book for information on the foods that your body will want to eat to stay healthy.

This book is, at best, an abbreviated reference guide. It is not a comprehensive list of alkaline foods nor is the information about the food items comprehensive.

The introduction provides a brief explanation of pH, why it is important to the body, the optimal pH level for your body, and how to obtain a proper pH balance. Unless you have prior, and more in-depth, knowledge on this subject, you will not understand any of it. The 101 food items covers the wide gamut of foods, but each only having a very cursory paragraph with information on what the food item is and the beneficial health value. It is difficult to determine the reliability of the author's information since she does not provide her sources. She does provide an internet link, at the back of the book, for an acid alkaline food chart, however. In her introduction she states that many people misunderstood certain fruits, like lemons and limes, to be acidic, but she does not clearly state whether they are in fact acidic or alkaline. Meanwhile, the chart she references states that lemons and limes are alkaline. That can be very confusing to someone without prior subject matter knowledge. She attempts to answer this misunderstanding by introducing another concept of "the ash of the foods" after digestion. She leaves us wanting on this and other issues.

This book does not live up to its title. It lacks in explaining more about pH, how the foods alkalize the body and blood, thereby boosting your health, and does very little, if any, to explain why and how someone with an optimal pH would lose fat. The information in this book is generic, and much more is found on the internet, free, with little research involved. For being an incomplete list, lacking greater information on pH, not explaining how one would lose fat, and failing to list sources, I give this book only one star.

This is a good intro. to learning how to eat basic foods. Its certainly not a scientific work and its not very technical. I am a physician so I would have liked a bit more depth. I did end up joining the site at the end in an effort to reduce my intake of acidic foods. I actually feel much better!:) Good read!

This book introduces health balance on a whole new level. The introduction explains what pH balance is giving background information. It explains that when the pH of a solution is less than 7 the solution is acidic, but if it is more than 7 it is alkaline. To have optimal body function pH levels need to have a range of 7.35-7.45, alkaline. Most people's diets as the book explains are more acidic, and I have to admit after reading just the introduction I knew my diet was wrong. This book helps people learn to eat healthier with a higher alkaline, a more optimal level of living for your body. Dr. Otto Warburg, who has received a Nobel Peace Prize, even discovered that those with cancer have high pH levels! I was astonished to see how much of an impact the pH levels really had.

The book is easy to follow and divided into simple sections of fruits, vegetables, roots vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains, and miscellaneous. It explains about where foods come from, why their good for you, what they contain and what those contents can benefit in your body. Not only that but it has a great breakdown of the history of the food, culture, and vitamins in them.

It's really great to finally read information on food and what exactly it can benefit. This book is wonderful for people who want to better understand what they eat and what it does for their body. Anyone looking for an easy way to improve health should definitely get this book. This book is a wonderful purchase and addition to anyone's kitchen!
