Book Description

Jennifer Gordon Sattler’s second book for children is adapted from the true story of a lonely puppy that wandered into the Albany post office in 1888 and fell asleep on a mailbag. He followed his "bed" onto a train and loved riding the rails so much that he spent the rest of his life traveling the mail cars of America. Postal workers named him Owney and adopted him as their railway mail service mascot. They gave him a special coat so post offices could pin tags on it noting the places he had visited. An exhibit at the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. features Owney and his coat with tags from all over the world. In Sattler’s story, Owney the mail dog rides the Adirondack railroad and discovers the wilderness with his new forest friends. They rescue him when he loses track of time and almost misses the train home! Kids will love riding the railroad with Owney and his friends as the conductor shouts, "Next stop, the Adirondacks!"

The author illustrates the book with twenty-one gorgeous full color paintings. Kids will love the Adirondack adventures of Owney and his wilderness friends. Sattler is also the author of the delightful Saratoga children’s book, Bella’s Saratoga Summer, published by Burns in 2002.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Adirondack Story, May 26, 2008
This review is from: All Aboard, Owney! The Adirondack Mail Dog (Paperback)
An interesting Adirondack story for small kids about a mail dog that travels around the Adirondacks and the world. A fun simple story with great pictures- especially the dog staring at the fish. I could picture him wagging his cute little tail!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: All Aboard, Owney! The Adirondack Mail Dog (Paperback)
I read this book and several others about Owney...far too much cutesy language and action. Bought it, read it, gave it away.

I really recommend:
A Lucky Dog: Owney, U.S. Rail Mail Mascot
A Lucky Dog is fantastic! I've used it with children and have participated in sending out a "Flat Owney" instead of a Flat Stanley.
