Book Description

July 2001
In his debut novella, Lawrence Christopher answers the call of his online readers by penning All About Mary. It began as an online short story (on TimBookTu.com) as the "Kickin' It with Mary" short story series, now the rest of the story is being told in this fast paced novella.

All About Mary is a romance mystery of the misguided life of Mary Jane Jenkins. Mary was a thick sistah who was described as "a cheeseburger away from two-hundred pounds." She was a pretty, young single mother of two, who was abused, misused and much loved. Oh for Mary, don't you weep. She's dead. Her fiancé Perry Rogers is arrested for killing her.

Perry's mother calls Private Investigator Mick Hart to prove her son is innocent against the charges. To support the charges against Perry, the police have motive, opportunity and the weapon with his prints on it. The police lack one thing, a confession. Mick interviews a long list of Mary's former lovers, who were not necessarily happy about her upcoming wedding. There is Mary's one time Sugar Daddy, there's one of her baby's daddies, there's a boss with whom she was having an affair and then there is a welfare pimp, all with whom Mary used to kick it.

Perry began kickin' it with Mary, soon kickin' it and screamin' with Mary, then kickin' it and carin' for Mary. It appears Perry has ended with him kickin' it and killin' Mary. But Perry tells Mick Hart all along, "I was in love with Mary Jane."

4.0 out of 5 stars "All About Mary" a rollercoaster ride of suspicion, January 27, 2002

Fasten your seat belts as Lawrence Christopher takes you on a ride through the life and death of Mary Jane Jenkins. The story unfolds as Private Investigator, Mick Hart, digs through a list of ex-lovers, rapist, and so-called friends, in search of the truth. With life-like characters such as Perry and little Sapphire, you can't help but to be drawn into their world. You will laugh a little, and maybe even cry a little too, but you certainly won't be board. The many twists and turns in this story will have you guessing, until the very end, "Who Did It?"

All About Mary was a different, but well written story. Mr. Christopher's fresh approach to the storyline kept my interest and I was entertained from beginning to end. The characters came to life and I can honestly say I know some folks like the ones in the story! Mr. Christopher created a story that has a "flava" not seen often, but it never takes away from the awesome plot and shocking ending. Kudos, Mr. Christopher, and I look forward to the stories that follow!

This review is from: All About Mary: A Mick Hart Mystery (Paperback)
The novella, All About Mary, gives you just that, everything about Mary. Mary Jane Jenkins is a woman that lived hard for what she needed to survive. A single mother of two young children, Mary used men just as they used her.

When the novella opens, we are introduced to the gruesome death of Mary and the arrest of her fiance'Perry Rogers. Perry is the prime suspect and to the police department, it's an open and shut case. However, private investigator Mick Hart does not see it that way and goes about tracking down Mary's killer at the request of Perry's mother. Hart comes across a list of suspects each of whom had a personal interest in Mary. Their interest ranged from lust, to like, to love.

Lawrence Christopher gives us a tale that is short but very complete. We understand Mary and her plight because we are privy to her childhood and her adulthood pre-Perry. I thoroughly enjoyed the comparison of butter to Mary's body; the chapter titles of some nursery school rhymes and song titles with references to "Mary".

This is very good murder-mystery that will make you shake your head just as you would have shaken some sense into Mary.
