5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST "OWL BOOKS" FOR CHILDREN I AM AWARE OF, September 17, 2011
This review is from: All About Owls (All About Series) (Paperback)
I cannot think of nor am I familiar with a better book to introduce the little ones to the amazing world of owls! With these mysterious creatures that have been the subject of so much of our historical lore, and bring such a thrill when heard late at night becoming, in many cases, more and more rare, it is most worthwhile that our children know more of them.

This particular owl book has been written and illustrated by Jim Arnosky, who in my opinion is one of the best in the business. His text is simply written on a conversational mode yet at the same time has not been dumbed down and is not condescending in the least. He tells it the way in is and his scientific facts are absolutely correct. He notes that there are 134 species of owls in the world today but features twelve North American species and does it quite well. His drawing and paintings of each of the owls is extremely accurate.

The book is simply filled with owl facts, both important and interesting. Their life cycle is discussed and the hunting habits of each are noted. The author stresses throughout the book how beneficial these night dwelling creatures are. He also notes their various sizes and their natural habitats. This book is targeted for those between the ages of 4 and 8 which is about right although I have observed children somewhat older enjoying the book also and I most certainly have seen adults enjoy the read; myself included. An example of the text is as follows:

"Owls are birds of prey, which means they
hunt, kill, and eat small animals. Eagles and hawks are also birds of prey.
But they are daytime birds. Owls are creatures of the night.
After sleeping all day, they awaken at dusk and hunt until dawn."

Some of the pages are double page spreads, others and single but the illustrations go perfectly with the text is all cases.

If you have the opportunity, take a child out at night and go "owl listening." It is something they will never forget. Knowing what they are hearing, via a book such as this, will greatly enhance this experience.

This is a great book. Do your child and yourself a favor and add it to the home library. You never can tell, a book like this may turn your child into a life long lover of birds and the other creatures around her or him.
