Book Description

Steve Jobs’ legacy is clear: The most innovative business leader of our time, the man FORTUNE named CEO of the Decade in 2009. Now from the pages of FORTUNE comes an anthology of 17 classic stories spanning the years 1983 to 2011 about the cultural icon who revolutionized computing, telephones, movies, music, retailing, and product design. The stories lay out in unparalleled detail the career of a man with relentless drive and a single underlying passion—to carry out his vision of how all of us would use technology. Writes managing editor Andy Serwer in the book’s foreward: “In the end he was proved right a billion times over, and his company Apple became one of the most successful enterprises on the planet.” All these stories are the product of deep reporting. In many cases FORTUNE’s writers spent hours interviewing Jobs and delving into his mind. The result is a singular journalistic collection, which will leave you with a comprehensive picture of Steve Jobs and Apple, a picture that is complex in the making yet simple in its triumph.

1.0 out of 5 stars Journalistic vanity -- skip it. September 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Steve Jobs has been relevant because what he's done, what he's said, and the way we views and approaches things. This book is a collection of articles written ABOUT Steve Jobs BY journalists who hope to engage an audience by sticking idealizing superlatives to the man in question, but not really provinding much insight into the real clockwork of his mind.

If you want to learn something from Steve Jobs, skip this book full of journalistic vanity and self-serving, empty narrative and go read his speech at Stanford, his interviews with Playboy and Wired, watch the Apple keynotes on YouTube. All this content is available to you for free on the Internet, why pay 10 bucks for the print equivalent of link bait? Use that money to rent Pirates of Silicon Valley instead and you'll still be able to buy popcorn and soda.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-researched journalism October 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been reading some of these stories on Fortune's website, and I must say I have been very impressed by the quality of the research and reporting that has gone into them. Some of the reports I have looked at represent many hours of background interviews with people who knew and worked with Steve Jobs. These aren't the fluff pieces that just regurgitate what others have reported before. Also, the articles mark snapshots in time of Job's career. They aren't fawning paeans, but neither are they smear campaigns: they appear to me to do a good job generally of providing even-handed coverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for times of crisis November 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have not decided yet to read the biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. I decided to start with this book because the stories were done over the career of Steve Jobs. I think that has a special value. There were not written last minute before the news of Jobs' illness and death.
Jobs was a businessman who took high risks with companies that might end in failure. In fact Pixar was in serious financial trouble until he got the deal with Disney (Toy Story).
I recommend this book. It is excellent not only for entrepreneurs and businessmen. It is an inspiring book.
