This review is from: All Alone (Hardcover)
A sweey story about a boy sent to the mountains to summer the stock all alone. The traditions in his town are for everyone to tend to themselves and mind their own business. The boy is lonely and discovers on another hillside is a classmate from the school and the 2 boys yodel to each other every night after dinner. When the classmate falls asleep and his stock wander over to the hillside where the boy is he watches over the extra stock till it's time to go to the watering place. While the boys are there a terrible thunderstorm hits causing major landslides and the 2 boys end up trapped on one of the hillsides together worried about all the trouble they were to be in for being together. The whole town has to give up their solitary ways and band together to dig up the hillside to get to the boys, discovering along the way if the boys had not been together when the storm hit one would have been washed away as that meadow was no longer there. The boys are rescued, taken to town and made heroes. This book won the 1954 Newbery Honor.
