5.0 out of 5 stars COMFORT FOODS
An excellent book that takes you along the Danube, stopping to
eat at every country and sample a little of their cuisine. The recipes are a great collection of comfort food that all are
sure to enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
This book fell apart as soon as I opened it. The glue wasn't strong enough to keep the pages together, and they fell right out of the book. And that was just a foretaste of the fact that the recipes were not going to be very useful at all. The problem is that it is very poorly organized...there is a heavy concentration on the countries involved instead of the dishes I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful, February 22, 2007
This review is from: All Along the Danube: Recipes from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria (Expanded) (Hippocrene International Cookbooks) (Paperback)
This book fell apart as soon as I opened it. The glue wasn't strong enough to keep the pages together, and they fell right out of the book. And that was just a foretaste of the fact that the recipes were not going to be very useful at all. The problem is that it is very poorly organized...there is a heavy concentration on the countries involved instead of the dishes I was interested in trying. The author couldn't decide whether it was a cookbook or a historic and geographic tour guide. She needed to make up her mind, but didn't.

The 3.5 Stars are because some of the recipes don't seem to have the right quantities/proportions - like it was lost in translation or maybe never tested. But there are some gems in the book - the sausage rolls are excellent and some of the noodle dishes remind me of things my grandmother cooked. I haven't tried it yet but there is a recipe for a cake made with farina that sounds very interesting. For gardeners who grow curbubits there are great recipes for them when you have too many and don't know what to do with them. As a odd note: On the cover of the book there are stuffed peppers - if you're expecting to find that recipe inside the book it's not there!

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing cover, good recipes, July 20, 2009
This review is from: All Along the Danube: Recipes from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria (Expanded) (Hippocrene International Cookbooks) (Paperback)
I believe the book contains many authentic recipes from the region. The section on Hungary has many of the recipes I grew up hearing about from my father and aunts and uncles. The recipes are not exactly as I remember, but then I doubt my grandmother had any of them written down. I was quite disappointed that I cannot find a recipe for stuffed peppers, especially since stuffed peppers are featured on the cover of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ethnic cooking from the old country and then some!, October 25, 2007

I liked this book very much because of the diversity of countries where the Danube flows. How often I'll use it I'm not sure, but its nice to have the resources of the different cuisines. I hope they are as authentic as they seem to be. :)
