3.0 out of 5 stars Can't process quart jars!
I almost bought this size but I bought the 21-1/2 quart one instead because, at the time, it was only $20 more. I'm glad I bought the bigger one because you cannot process quart jars using the hot water bath method because the 15-1/2 size is not deep enough. I plan to can tomatoes so I would have had to return the 15-1/2 cooker.

I received the 21-1/2 cooker...

When I first ordered this canner, I wasn't sure if I would be able to maintain a steady pressure with my "pulsating" flat-top stove. With the thick aluminum walls, I have no problems at all. In fact, with such thick walls, I can put the burner on "high" and it will slowly build up pressure so I don't have to stand over the stove and constantly monitor as the pressure increases. Once at pressure, it is very easy to maintain the required pressure without having to constantly vent off excess pressure. The owner's manual recommends one to four jiggles per minute. It takes longer for this canner to cool down than others due to the thick walls. I factor this in to my processing time. It will maintain it's pressure (15 psi) for almost another 10 minutes with the burner off. This canner is designed to fit 7 quart jars perfectly. If your looking for a canner, this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works extemely well, leak free, for multiple daily uses in laboratory, August 18, 2008
This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
One of the labs I supervised lacked funding to purchase an autoclave. We sterilized media broth, media agar, dilution agents, Petri dishes, flasks, bottles, and other microbiology utensils in a Mirro pressure canner. We sterilized a minimum of three batches daily, five and six days a week, year round. The Mirro canners constantly required new seals, yet the lids still frequently warped and leaked all over the stove. We replaced the Mirro canner twice in a year, let alone all of the gaskets we went through. I bought this All American pressure cooker when I saw the unique no gasket design, securing lugs, and the safety features built into this pressure cooker. My micro staff loved this pressure cooker. This All American pressure cooker never leaked, the lid fit perfectly time after time, and all of our batches came out properly sterilized. It impressed me so much after almost two years' use in a laboratory setting, that I am now buying one for my home canning. Made in USA, heavily built, well-engineered for performance and safety, and proven to me in multiple daily uses with three different users, including myself--a great pressure cooker in my experience, far better than the others we tried.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pressure canner is rock solid, December 17, 2000

This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
I purchased this pressure cooker to do home canning. I am truly impressed with the product. It is build rock solid. A feature that I particularly enjoy is the lack of rubber seal required to use the cooker. The only problem I had with this item was the steamer plate that is used to elevate the canning jars above the bottom of the pot. It pitted easily and is not made of the same high quality aluminum that the pot is. Otherwise, the canner is built like a tank and weighs as much too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A girls best friend, June 11, 2008
This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
I bought a presto and used it on my first canning job. Needless to say all 20 pints of my green beans did not seal. They were all wasted along with all the time it took to prepare them. I then went to the Amish store and bought an All American Canner! While Ms. Miller (unhappy poster) seemed a little mad that the canner was so thick, it made me happy to know it was sound and I did not have to worry about the lid blowing off with all of the All American's safety features. During the winter I can almost a whole beef in about a weeks time. I run two 21 qt. AA Canners on my glass top stove from 8 in the morning till 3 or 4 pm. I have never had a problem with the canner or the glass top stove. I am cautious not to drop my canner. I do not find putting the lid on difficult. You just have to do it evenly. Happy Canning!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great and MADE IN THE USA, December 12, 2008

It works great the only dislike is that I have had the lid stuck twice but know now to loosen the wing nuts just a little with about 4 to 5 lbs in the cooker just tell the steam starts leaking out and then let it cool the rest of the way. Besides that it is great PLUS it is MADE IN THE USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great canner, September 22, 2001

This canner is excellent. It is very heavy, and you don't have to worry about the rubber seal because there isn't one. I bought one this year because my okra and tomatoes just wouldn't stop producing. But I have also used it as a boiling water canner for making fig jam, peach jam, pear jam...ect... I've also made pickles both sweet and dill. Comes with very clear instructions and you can begin to use it the day it is delivered - as long as you have the rest of the canning equip. Now the only problem is where to hide it so that my darling spouse won't use it every day !

I received the 21-1/2 cooker and was overwhelmed by the immense size and heft of it but I'm glad I ordered the bigger one. I just found out by reading the manual that the 15-1/2 size won't process quart jars. Bummer.

Just thought I'd post this here in case anyone was interested in buying this to process quart jars of tomatoes!

(A few days ago, the price on the 15-1/2 was $179 and now it's $239! The 21-1/2 size is $199!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use canner., June 1, 2005

This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
I purchased this canner in the fall to can some deer meat. This canner is so easy to use. I've helped mom can in the past ,but never with a pressure cooker. She was always afraid of them. After seeing me can with mine, she changed her mind on how safe they can be. I started to can my 2 deer, then had to can my dads and my brother-in-laws. The really nice thing is you can do other stuff while canning because you can hear the jiggles. I done alot of research on line before my purchase and I'm so glad I made the right purchase. Thanks so much Wisconsin Foundry for such as nice product.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Of the Made In The USA Products., March 29, 2008
This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
In planning for the coming planting season we felt the need for a better pressure canner than the one we had. After a thorough product search we decided that the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry Pressure Canner/Cooker appeared to meet our needs. We ordered the model 915 and after it arrived we were even more impressed with the precision workmanship and exceptional engineering that provided gasket free pressurization with three separate over-pressure monitoring and safety features. Let no one doubt the superiority of American made products and particularly the Wisconsion Alumnum Foundry pressure canner/cooker that promises to provide a lifetime of reliable service. The price is higher than one might expect but compared to the quality of design and operation it is an absolute bargain.

This review is from: All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
I purchased this canner for a big canning job - 300 lbs. of pumpkin. While it is impressively crafted and heavy (it is built like a nuclear containment vessel), my Mom's 30 year old Presto Deluxe canner kicked this thing's can (no pun intended). The metal on this canner is unbelievably thick and it is quite heavy. Because of this it takes forever to come up to pressure, (with all that heavy metal it acts like a big radiator) and it takes longer to cool down - hours, literally. This also means it is much less efficient (more gas/electricity required to can). I could cycle almost four times in the old canner to two cycles of this one. The gasketless metal-to-metal seal was fussy, very easy to seat incorrectly, and despite greasing the seat with vaseline every cycle it managed to stick every time making it difficult to open. This canner is probably adequate if you don't can much and you don't care about time or energy (gas/electric). While my Mom ooh'ed and aw'ed initially, in the end she deemed it unworthy of her kitchen. Mom has great instincts; I sent it back.
