Mid-70s solo debut from ex-McCoy/Winter Bros. guitarist,
By
This review is from: All American Boy (Audio CD)
Having broken into the music business in 1965 with the McCoys, and honed his guitar playing skills in both Johnny and Edgar Winter's bands, Derringer was ripe for this solo debut. Released in 1974 (essentially on a short hiatus from the Winter brothers bands), it combined the guitar skills he'd developed with impressive songwriting and production skills. The glam-rock cover photo provides a hint as to some of the lyrics free-wheeling attitude, but not to the quality of the playing. The hit single "Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo" is only the start of this LPs story. Derringer's multi-instrumental talents carry the rockers and ballads, with a little help from the likes of Joe Walsh (who was recording solo between his gigs with the James Gang and the Eagles) to great heights. Nothing he recorded with the Winters, or on his subsequent solo LPs could match the focus and drive on this debut. 12 excellent original tracks make this album anything but a one-hit wonder.

Tuneful Mid-70s Hard Rock,
By
This review is from: All American Boy (Audio CD)
Rick Derringer's quite sporadic career reached a high point with the 1973 release of his first solo album. "All American Boy," remains his best album and most vital work, and also contains his biggest solo single, "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Coo." Derringer's sound is quite similar to contemporary Edgar Winter, whose band he also played in. Other highlights include "Teenage Queen," "Teenage Love Affair" and the delightfuly titled "The Airport Giveth (The Airport Taketh Away). This is hard rock with a sense of melody and a sense of humor, both of which help the album stand out from others of its era.

Superstar,
By bill smith (cali) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All American Boy (Audio CD)
This album never turned Rick Derringer into a superstar but it should have!
The songs on this album MAKE you want to catch a Rick Derringer concert. All the firepower of a Derringer concert is captured on this studio CD. It starts off with Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo which has become such a classic it has been played on the radio more than 1 million times! Two insturmentals are on this album;Joy Ride and Time Warp.Neither of them diappoints.Rick has always had a special knack for writing these kinds of songs. Another charted song Teenage Love Affair is here as well and years later it still sounds invigorating and fresh. The thoughtfulness of Hold, the class of Jump Jump Jump, the atmosphere of It's Raining...it's all here folks. A person could go on describing this album forever and a day.It is one of those albums which captures exactly the musical vibe that was going on in the 70's. Gemstone after gemstone with a special mention going to Slide On Over Slinky which can only be described as a mature version of Hang On Sloopy. If you want to know what Rock and Roll is all about buy this album!!!!!!!!
