5.0 out of 5 stars Energized sevillana style vocals with powerful beat., September 29, 1999
This review is from: All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites (Audio CD)
These sevillanas are just great and its amazing to me that they are not heard much. Maybe because, in spite of the great listening and the flamenco action that is heard, you are left out of the visual action. Not being a native speaker of the language, having the spanish lyrics to the music would greatly enhance the enjoyment. I've tried to find lyrics on the net, and even tried to purchase lyrics from the distributor Madacy, all without success.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to flamenco, July 20, 2006

This review is from: All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites (Audio CD)
This CD was my introduction to flamenco, and it stimulated my interest both in the musical form and in flamenco guitar technique. At least half of the tracks are solo guitar played by the ground-breaking 20th century master Sabicas (all of these are also on Sabicas' Flamenco on Fire). Sabicas was one of Paco de Lucia's inspirations, and his playing is technically brilliant on the tracks on this CD. The non-solo guitar tracks (nearly half) are from a spirited ensemble whose identity I haven't determined (and unfortunately no info is provided on the disc), and have singing (cante) accompanied by guitar, hand-clapping (palmas), foot-stamping (zapateado), sometimes castanets, and occasionally other instruments (piano on one track and flute on another). The singing isn't quite as raw, probably, as traditional cante, but is enjoyable listening. The only thing missing is dancing (baile) which you obviously can't watch from a CD.

Luna Por el Rocio and No Lo Beses en la Boca knock me out. I keep looking for another album with songs so evocative. I've found some that come close.

If you've ever been to a good Flamenco show in Seville or Madrid, you will appreciate this Disc. It is the real thing and all the emotion and intensity comes through. I would also recommend Paco Cepreo's new disc available in Europe but I have not seen it in the U.S. yet.
