All species illustrated, but weakly and with insufficient text, July 6, 2008
This review is from: All the Birds of Brazil (Paperback)
Basics: 2002, softcover, 356 pages, 157 color plates, 1600+ species, range map for each bird
This is the best complete field guide available for Brazil. However, it is the "best" because it is the only complete field available to date -- not because it is a remarkable book on its own. The only asset of this book is the fact all Brazilian species are illustrated, described, and shown with a range map. I'd give this book 2.5 stars if I could.
Each of the 157 color plates holds 8-11 species. Most birds are shown by only one illustration. These illustrations are simply average and do not contain the necessary detail to offer solid confidence in identifying any of the difficult groups of birds in Brazil. Unfortunately, these illustrations also seem to suffer from a slightly washed out, hazy look to the colors. I suspect this is a printing issue since a few of the pages (woodpeckers, toucans) do appear slightly brighter on the plates and with the printed text.
Each bird is described in 4-8 short lines, typically with just one or two key identification points. A brief description of the calls is often included. If you're in the field looking at mystery bird and the illustration is not helping you, you probably won't get much more assistance from the description.
As for the range maps, they are small (2 x 2cm) and printed in light gray that stands out just enough to make out the range. Fortunately, the author did include the outlines of all the states to give a more detailed reference of where the bird is found.
This book was first published in Portuguese. Later English printings are often more difficult to find.
You'll still want to bring this book to Brazil, but just keep in mind it will not help you in all cases, nor with the necessary detail needed for many species. This book is a decent first work. I'm eager to see the few other Brazilian books currently in progress for publication over the next two years.
I've listed several related books below...

A decent starting point, May 20, 2009
This review is from: All the Birds of Brazil (Paperback)
I own this book in its Portuguese edition. It was the first field guide I bought and served its initial purpose: to identify most of the species I was photographing. But, as the other reviewer noted, the illustrations are small and sparse, many suffering from color distortions, and there are usually none for immature birds -- which can cause a lot of confusion when this plummage differs greatly from the adult one.
I went from this guide to Sigrist's "Guia de Campo das Aves do Brasil Oriental" (Field Guide to the Birds of Oriental Brazil, volume 1 of 2 that cover all the BR species) which is a bilingual edition and has better and more numerous illustrations (males and females, immatures, etc.). The problem with it is that it seems to be out of print even in Brazil...
Thus, Deodato's remains the only modern, complete field guide to Brazilian birds. A huge, incomprehensible shame, considering the country's avian diversity. The author reasearched, illustrated and published this book at his own expense and time (I talked to him when the guide first came out; he sent it me himself). He definitely gets an A for sacrifice and effort, and there is no denying his work is invaluable, no matter what its flaws are.

ALL THE BIRDS OF BRAZIL, June 30, 2009
This review is from: All the Birds of Brazil (Paperback)
In order to prepare for a birding trip to Brazil, a search was made of available texts. There is a new Brazil bird book in publication, but the release date keeps slipping. All the Birds of Brazil was available, it is affordable and appears to be quite useful. Its size is not too bad so it can be carried into the field. The cost was reasonable and it arrived quickly.
The plates are larger than a lot of bird books so the species are well depicted and not crowded. The brief write ups and the range maps appear useful too. There are a few problems with the index, but nothing major. The paintings are not the best that I have seen, but appear to be adequate for identification of what one is looking at in Brazil.
I would recommend it until something better for the cost comes along.
