Fill Up on Fiber

The studies are clear--fiber can help promote weight loss and healthier eating patterns, while increasing overall health:

  • Fiber takes longer to chew and slows down the rate at which we eat--giving our bodies a chance to let us know when we are full.
  • With fewer calories and greater bulk, high-fiber foods help us feel fuller for longer.
  • Fiber helps keep the digestive tract clean and healthy decreasing risk of intestinal disease.
  • Fiber-rich diets can help lower 'bad' cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and help control blood sugar levels.

Up the Fiber in your diet with these great recipes:

Cinnamon Roll Biscuits

These delicious cinnamon roll biscuits are enriched with a cup of All-Bran cereal for a natural boost of fiber. (Of course, that's not the reason you're going to love them.)

Prep Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 12

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, divided
  • 1 cup Kellogg's All-Bran Original cereal
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1-tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup caramel ice cream topping

  1. In a large bowl combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in 1/2 cup cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in center of flour mixture.
  2. In a medium bowl combine KELLOGG'S ALL-BRAN ORIGINAL cereal with milk; let stand 6 minutes or until cereal softens. Stir into flour mixture until dough just forms a ball.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, knead dough gently 10 to 12 strokes. Roll or pat dough on lightly floured surface into a 14 X 10-inch rectangle.
  4. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread dough with 1/2 cup softened butter; sprinkle with cinnamon mixture.
  5. Roll up in a spiral, starting from the long side. Pinch seam to seal.
  6. With a knife, cut into 12 thick slices. Arrange slices, cut side down, in a 13 X 9 X 2-inch baking pan coated with cooking spray.

I guess that's a pun of some kind. Anyway, about 30 years ago I went to a lecture about colon cancer at the company health club, and decided that wasn't for me. The MD presenting said an easy way to avoid it was to eat All-Bran for breakfast, and since then I've only missed maybe 10 days. All-Bran is hard to find in supermarkets, almost impossible to find in restaurants, so the subscription is very convenient. It may taste like cardboard (vanilla flavored almond milk helps), but it does the job, and my colonoscopies are consistently boring.

Update 4/12/15: This is no longer available in my area, and was a product of Mexico when last purchsed -- even the box was of poor quality. And, as others have noted, it's wicked expensive and possibly contaminated and of lesser quality these days when ordered online. I have complained regularly, both in my local stores ("sorry, we can't get it"), and to Kellogs ("we've changed manufacturers, should be available soon"). The net result of my complaints has been one coupon from Kellogs for $1.25.

Looking at alternatives that others have recommended as well as Citrucel, or Life Extension fiber supplements. Very disappointed in Kellogs, who have a lot of work to do to regain my business and trust.

Excellent website at rating many breakfast cereals; read the ingredients and look at the total grams of fiber (soluble and insoluble), calories, fat and sugar. I'm abandoning All-Bran until Kellog's gets their act together. Both Post and General Mills have what appear to be viable alternatives. In case Amazon censors URLs, Google "How does your cereal rate?".

My family has been enjoying All-Bran original for 15 years or more. Suddenly it has become almost impossible to find in grocery stores, so I ended up purchasing it online. Everyone in my household is a dedicated label reader so it wasn't long before my son discovered that the box stated "Product of Mexico" ! Since we routinely check labels I am certain this is a new development, and most likely only an issue with online purchases (where you can't check the label...) I am returning the boxes and will not purchase cereal online again. We will either find the product in local stores, or find an alternative high-fiber cereal. We prefer our food to be USA produced.

Kellogg's All-Bran is one of the healthier cereals on the market.

I reached this conclusion after I skimmed the entirety of my local Meijer's cereal aisle. There are many cereals that claim to be healthy choices, but what I was looking for was a good ratio of protein and fiber to carbohydrates.

All-Bran fits my criteria of what a healthy cereal should be. A serving (half-cup) constitutes just 23 grams of carbs and yet it packs in 10 grams of fiber and another 4 grams of protein. When you take into consideration the half-cup of milk to be added to it, and also the slew of vitamins from both the cereal and the milk itself, you'll find that you have a terrific start to your nutritious day.

It tastes pretty darn good. For having just six grams of sugar, I'm surprised by how much I crave it at times. It's actually a treat that you can enjoy when you're craving something sweet. Or at least it will satisfy you enough to halt your craving for something more damaging to your diet.

I fully recommend Kellogg's All-Bran. It's a food that you can include in your diet to better yourself, whether you want to lose weight or just feel good and be healthy in general. It's tasty and nutritious!

Summit Solutions needs to get its act together: 4 of 5 boxes were crunched and one damaged. The plastic wrapping around the boxes was way too tight. $10+ for a box of cereals is excessive. In addition, the product comes from Mexico where any kind of pesticides are used. I'm going to increase my consumption of Post " Shredded Wheat & Bran" which contains almost the same amount of fiber ; no added sugar; has a more reasonable price and is a product of the USA.

Loved this cereal, couldn't find the Original in stores, was happy buying it from Amazon on Subscribe and Save, 5 boxes for around $15. Now they want over $45 for the SAME thing? What?? Also just found out it has GMOs and is now being made in Mexico. Will be looking for an organic replacement, hopefully made in the US.

This is a good cereal and good for you. Also, it was shipped on time and in good condition. I highly recommend using the monthly delivery option. I LOVE not having to buy cereal every week. It just arrives at your door step and that's it!

I used to eat this stuff every day when I was a teenager training for high school football back around 1990-1991. I believe that all the vitamins and other nutrients fueled my body so that I was able to gain strength in the weight room quite fast, while having lots of energy. All the fiber kept the digestive tract clean as well.
Someone mentioned that the recipe has changed. I thought so as well because I specifically remember prune juice as being one of the ingredients back in those days. I had trouble finding the original all-bran at my local supermarket, could only find the "flake" and "buds" variations. I tried the All-Bran buds, and was not satisfied. The product seemed less flavorful and less nutrient-dense (judging by texture) than I remember. I give it 4 stars because of good memories, and will reserve further judgment until I try the original again.
