5.0 out of 5 stars Her best melancholy tune to date..., March 14, 2003

I really liked "My All" when it came out! That and "Honey" were two reasons which made me purchase the incredible "Butterfly" (which should be issued an "essential recording" by amazon.com, why aren't there any for Mariah?!). I really think this is Mariah at the pennicle of her career (Though "Glitter" and "Rainbow" did have some amazing tracks). I love all the songs on this discs. not only do we have the #1 Spanish-flavored Ballad "My All" (produced by longtime friend and writer Walter Alfansieff), but we also have a killer club mix of it as well. In addition to the two "My All" tracks, MC doesn't let us down... as there are some bonus ones like "Breakdown (Mo Thugs Mix" which is a great extended version (same beats and everything) of the non-commercially released single "Breakdown" featuring Bone Thugs 'n Harmony. "The Roof (Mobb Deep Mix)" is a great R&B/Hip-Hop tune produced by Tone of Trackmasters (yes, the guy from Toni Tone Tony) and was a non-commercial released single. This is the same version as seen on the video, and is basically the same as the original but includes a rap from Mobb Deep. Last but not leased is the groovy "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" which takes Elton John's classic song "Skyline Pigeon" to another level (also on her album, "Butterfly"). Overall, "My All" is a great Latin-flavored #1 single and is reccomended to all Mariah and Non-Mariah fans as well... and is similar to "Just To hold You Once Again" from "Music Box" but the lyrics and music seem better to me. Overall grade: A+(+)

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah's best song and best maxi-single ever, August 1, 2004
This review is from: My All / Breakdown / Roof / Fly Away (Audio CD)
The maxi-single of "My All" is amazing. I reccomend it to Mariah Carey collectors and people who don't own the "Butterfly" album, but want to get a feel for it, because this maxi-single is more of an EP than a single.
1) MY ALL (ALBUM VERSION) - Mariah's best song ever. Her voice has so much emotion that the singer knows how she is feeling. I love the quitar and the spanish tone to it. Mariah doesn't oversing either. It sounds perfect.

2) MY ALL (CLASSIC CLUB MIX) - This is an amazing club remix. This shows how "My All" can easily be turned into a dance remix. You can't even tell that it was a slow song. The beat is very infectous, and Mariah's added vocals make it what it is.

3)BREAKDOWN (The Mo' Thugs Remix) - I don't know why sony didn't promote this song as much as they could, this is one of Mariah's most creative efforts to date. It sounds a lot like Bone-Thugs "Tha Crossroads". Mariah sings with a quiet tone voice through the first half of the song, which suits the song so well. Then Bone Thugs N' Harmony show their unique rap talents in the rap part. Then Mariah belt's out the adlibs at the end during the choruses. The difference between this version and the "Butterfly" album version, is that There is an extra Bone-Thugs part at the beginning, and an extra rap part after the original rap part. Also, the song ends at full volume, while the album version fades out. Everything else is identicial to the album version.

4)THE ROOF (MOBB DEEP MIX) - Again, I don't know why sony didn't promote this song as much as they could. This song is really something. It samples Mobb Deeps, "Shooked Ones Pt.II", which explains their appearance on this song. Mariah took that sample and added violins, piano, bells and city noises throughout the whole song. She sings in falsetto for this song only rasing her voice a few times. It suits the song, and it shows Mariah's telents as a songwriter. The beat is very heavy, and catchy. Mobb Deep gives a rap part, and rap a few adlibs throughout the song. Everything else about the song, is identical to the album version. This is definetely a Mariah that we don't see very often, where she shows her non-artificial, smooth and sexy side, that we saw during her "Butterfly" period. The song is about a roof-top encounter, and it's truly one of Mariah's best performances ever. It goes beyond her voice. Also, the video is really hot.

5) FLY AWAY (BUTTERFLY REPRISE) (FLY AWAY CLUB MIX) - This is an extended mix of the "Butterfly Reprise" on the "Butterfly" album. Which is a dance remix of her song "Butterfly". It is just like the album version but it has a lot more parts with just music. Mariah's voice sounds amazing. She does high notes and adlibs and her backup singsers belt out the chorus of "Butterfly". The piano and the beats together sound amazing, which further sohws how Mariah enriched the remix scene. This song samples Elton John's "Skyline Pigeon".

***As you can see, this is a very versitile single, where you get dance, adult contempoary, R&B, and hip-hop. It's almost like a mini-version of the "Butterfly" album, sicne 3 of the songs are barely altered versions of songs from the album, and one of the songs is taken straight from the album. So, if you have the "Butterfly" album, this may not be of use to you, but if you don't THEN GET THIS SINGLE!! Also get it if you are a die hard fan of Mariah. This is the reason why "My All" went to No.1 on The Billboard Hot 100. And this is the Mariah, where she was being herself and where she hit her creative peak.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the remixes that make this worth buying, November 4, 2002
This review is from: My All / Breakdown / Roof / Fly Away (Audio CD)
The album version of Carey's hit is as routine as most of her ballads, but the 9:06 long "Classic Club Mix" and the almost ten-minute long "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" can make even the residents of "FOREST LAWN" get up and "shake a leg".

5.0 out of 5 stars My All, February 26, 2011
By
rmcrae (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My All / Breakdown / Roof / Fly Away (Audio CD)
The 1997 recording for Butterfly was a mixed bag of emotions for 27 year old songbird Mariah Carey. She'd just separated from husband Tommy Mottola and was taking her music in a more hip-hop driven direction. Although she was thrilled at her newfound freedom, she was also a bit scared and lost. Those feelings of melancholy found their way into her songwriting and the singer has confessed several times that Butterfly is her favorite and most personal album.

While vacationing in Puerto Rico, Carey absorbed the Latin music and culture surrounding her, playing around with some harmonies and melodies she'd heard. That song would become her 13th #1 hit My All. Released as the 2nd commercial and final single in early 1998, My All is a sultry, Latin flavored slow jam yearning to be reunited once more with a former lover.

Opening with only a Spanish guitar, Mariah softly sings "I'm thinking of you/In my sleepless solitude tonight/If it's wrong to love you/Then my heart just won't let me be right/Cuz I've drowned in you/And I won't pull through/Without you by my side", before declaring "I'd give my all to have/Just one more night with you/I'd risk my life to feel/Your body next to mine/Cuz I can't go on/Living in the memory of our song/I'd give my all for your love tonight." Some light strings make an entrance as Mariah's vocals gain more power. By the end, she's overwhelmed with lust and longing until the reality that her prayer will never be answered brings her back down. "I'd give my all for your love tonight" and the song closes. The Classic Club Mix is given a pulsating dance beat and more gospel inspired backup vocals. Mariah keeps the original's first verse, but adds new vocals and adlibs in the second half. So much fun to dance to.

Because Tommy Mottola was such a bitter and stingy troll, singles like Butterfly, The Roof, and Breakdown were never released commercially in the US. Mariah made sure to include the remixes on the My All single and it's wonderful that they're given their chance to shine.

The Mo' Thugs Remix for the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony collabo Breakdown features an intro from member Layzie Bone ("Don't break down yet it's over, over...") as well as some extended raps from Krayzie and Wish Bone. Pretending to move on from a failed relationship, Mariah breaks down and cries over her ex in private. "So what do you do when somebody you're devoted to/Suddenly just stops loving you and it seems they haven't got a clue/Of the pain that rejection is putting you through?/Do you cling to your pride and sing "I will survive"?/Do you lash out and say "How dare you leave this way"?/Do you hold on in vain as they just slip away?" Her whispery vocals work perfectly along side the Thugs' "speak sing" raps.

The slinky The Roof (Mobb Depp Mix) is the video version with added raps from Mobb Depp (a sample of their song The Shook Ones PT. 2 is used). Reminiscing about a long ago encounter with a former flame on a rainy rooftop, Mariah purrs "Everytime I feel the need/I envision you caressing me/And go back in time/To relive the splendor of you and I/On the rooftop that rainy night." One of my favs from Butterfly.

Speaking of Butterfly, the Fly Away Club Mix is an extended version of the album's Butterfly reprise. Where the original came from the point of view of a woman who reluctantly frees her ex from their relationship, the house-laced remix takes on the view of a woman celebrating her newfound freedom. An obvious reference to Mottola. The Elton John sample of Skyline Pigeon is absolutely ethereal with an airy flute, Mimi's soaring vocals, and the gospel based background singers. "Spread your wings and prepare to fly/For you have become a butterfly!"

If you're able to snag the My All single, go for it! Butterfly features some of Mariah's best singles and the remixes are all fantastic. Highly recommended.

Great songs for just about anyone no matter what your music taste. Easy lyrics to understand and swallow but deep enough to make you feel sad. Good addition to your music library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah's All, October 30, 2000

Mariah's hit single "My All" is a great song with extra tracks, such as "The Roof (Mobb Deep Mix)," "Breakdown (Mo' Thugs Remix," and a few others. The Breakdown remix is great! Mariah's vocal's combined with that of Bone-Thugs and Harmony is out of this world! This is a great single, which is very hard to find nowadays considering there was only a small amount made when the single was released in 1998. If you are a fan a remixes from her notorious "Butterfly" album, then this is one for you. (There is a total of 5 songs on this single.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Her at her prime. 5 stars., December 2, 2007
This review is from: My All / Breakdown / Roof / Fly Away (Audio CD)
This is a superbly written and produced ballad. About being lonely and only wanting that special person to be in your life and sharing your love with each other...

Worth the price (0.01) they're asking you and definitely worth the shipping price (2.98) for a total of less than 3.00.

Love you, Mariah.
