4.0 out of 5 stars Serves Its Intended Purpose Well, August 27, 2012
This review is from: All-Clad Round Chafing Dish (Kitchen)
I own three of these All-Clad round chafing dishes and use them frequently for home entertaining. It's a great-looking server for both hors d'oeuvres and side dishes and its primary purpose is to keep food warm.

This chafing dish is a smaller and more stylish alternative to the larger, rectangular ones frequently used by caterers. In fact, All-Clad itself also makes a larger, albeit much more expensive, rectangular chafing dish (Model #59909) for home entertaining.

Directions for use are simple. Place the chafing dish on a sturdy surface so that all three feet are flat. Fill the included fuel vessel first and light with care. Add near-boiling water to the water/chafing pan, in order to save time by not having to heat the water from room temperature. Adjust the fuel vessel cover so that the water stays just below boiling. Once the water has reached the appropriate temperature, set the separate food pan insert over the water/chafing pan. Finally, place the food that you want to keep warm into the food pan insert.

In addition to its contemporary styling and classy appearance, the heavier-gauge 18/10 stainless steel used to make this chafing dish enhances its quality by adding a bit more heft to it, compared to the similarly-sized but flimsier ones I've seen elsewhere. It should be noted, however, that both the water pan and food pan do appear to be made of just one single layer of steel rather than the bonded layers of metal traditionally found in most of All-Clad's other cookware. While this single layer is much thinner than All-Clad's traditional cookware, both the water pan and food pan are still made well and perform nicely. Another nice feature adding to its quality is the stainless steel, removable dome lid which looks classy, fits nicely and is heavier than one might expect.

Having three of these smaller, round chafing dishes allows me to serve guests in my home more than one food item at a time. The 3.5 quart food pan capacity of each chafing dish is quite adequate, in that regard. The actual size of the food pan is approximately 4.75" deep and 9.5" wide (or 10.75" with the flared rim), as measured with a ruler. All-Clad touts this particular chafing dish as being "a one-of-a-kind individual chafer, ideal for smaller servings" and I would say that description is quite accurate. Consumers seeking to use this particular chafing dish to serve many guests at a larger function might find its 3.5 quart capacity to be less than ideal and potentially problematic.

As with most, if not all, of the items in All Clad's Home Entertaining Collection, this chafing dish is made in China which is somewhat disappointing. Considering the All-Clad name and high price for this item, one might instead expect it to at least be made in the USA. However, this is only a minor complaint and does not really affect my opinion of this chafing dish itself, as it looks very good and performs well for me.

When considering the purchase of this chafing dish, consumers should be aware that All-Clad also manufacturers a larger 4.5 quart version (Model #59910). Unlike this smaller version which has a removable lid, the larger version is designed with a lid that rolls back underneath itself and has a unique locking mechanism allowing the dish to stay open at any setting the user chooses. That larger version also costs twice as much as this small round chafing dish.

Overall, I'm quite happy with this chafing dish and find that it serves its intended purpose well. If it was priced a bit cheaper and made in the USA rather than China, I would have given it 5 stars instead of just 4.

Purchased this for my daughter in law, gave her the larger rectangular version about a year ago. She loved the first unit, but actually likes this smaller round version more. It is more practical and will get much more use than the large unit in her opinion. If my daughter-in-law likes it, I like it. Robert L Brewer.

I purchased this as a gift for my son and daughter-in-law. They use it every Christmas Eve during their open house and for other parties. It is now about 3 years old and looks as beautiful as the day they received it. Very durable and keeps food warm as it should. Happy I purchased it.
