About the Author

From the moment of His birth (in New York, on November 3, 1939), Adi Da Samraj was consciously aware of His native Divine Condition: the Condition of everyone and everything. As soon as He became able to use language, He gave this Condition a simple but very descriptive Name- "the Bright". At two years of age, Adi Da Samraj spontaneously decided to relinquish His constant enjoyment of the "Bright" out of what He describes as a "painful loving", a sympathy for the suffering and ignorance of human beings. Avatar Adi Da confesses that He chose to "Learn Man"- to pass through all of the "ordinary" human limitations and presumptions that people suffer, and also to pass through the entire spectrum of "extraordinary" spiritual phenomena that people can seek and attain- in order to discover how to draw human beings into the "Bright" Divine Condition that He knew as His own True State and the True State of everyone.

This utter submission to all aspects of human life was the first purpose of Adi Da's Incarnation. In His spiritual autobiography, The Knee Of Listening, Avatar Adi Da recounts this amazing and heroic ordeal, which lasted for the first thirty years of His life.

In 1970, Avatar Adi Da finally Re-Awakened permanently to the "Bright", and embarked upon the second great purpose of His Incarnation- the process of "Teaching Man".

When He began to teach others, Avatar Adi Da Samraj simply made Himself available to all who were willing to enter into the living process of God-Realization in His company- a process which He summarized as the relationship to Him, rather than any method or technique of spiritual attainment. Through that intimate human and spiritual relationship Adi Da Samraj perfectly embraced each of His devotees, using every kind of skillful means to Awaken them to the Truth that the separate and separative ego - with all its fear, anxieties, and fruitless seeking for Happiness - is self-imposed suffering, a contraction of Being (which He calls "the self-contraction"). True Happiness, He revealed, cannot be attained through any kind of search, because It is "always already the case". And He offered the practice of heart-communion with Him as the effective means of going beyond the self-contraction, and thereby realizing real Happiness.

In the almost 30 years since Avatar Adi Da Samraj began formally teaching He has communicated a vast store of Wisdom, including over 60 publications, thousands of recorded talks, and twenty-three "Source-Texts". But He has also done far more than that: He has created a whole new way of life, a new religion, which is now practiced by people of different cultures in many parts of the world.

Just as the religions of Christianity and Buddhism are named after their founders, the religion founded by Avatar Adi Da is named after Him- it is called "Adidam" (AH-dee-DAHM). Adidam is an all-embracing practice that takes every aspect of human life- the "lowest" as well as the "highest"- into account.

More About the Author

Adi Da was born in New York at the outbreak of World War II. From 1983 he lived principally in Fiji and became a Fijian citizen. The author of over sixty books on spirituality and a prolific artist, he also had profound attention for world affairs, particularly during the last decade of his life, as summarized in Not-Two Is Peace.
Adi Da was born in a unique spiritual state. As a young man, he immersed himself in the traditions of human wisdom and spirituality. His Western studies included university degrees--in philosophy from Columbia and in literature from Stanford. Following his university years, he intensively engaged both Western and Eastern forms of spiritual practice.
In 1970, at the age of thirty, Adi Da was re-established in the illumined condition he had known in his earliest life. He began to offer formal instruction in spiritual practice to those who came to him, creating (out of a free interactive participation with his devotees) what is now an unprecedented body of spiritual, philosophical, and practical writings (find the most current offerings at the Dawn Horse Press website), as well as an immense body of visual art (the website dedicated to Adi Da's art is called Daplastique). In 2007, his artwork was exhibited at the 52nd Venice Biennale, and subsequently in several other exhibitions, including in Florence, New York, and Los Angeles.
As spiritual teacher, artist, and "World Friend", Adi Da is not a conventional figure. He is not political in any ordinary sense of the word. Rather, his address to humanity comes from his lifelong communication of the truth of human existence. He is making clear the species-endangering forces of limitation in our world, the means to go beyond them, and the great urgency of this "going beyond".

5.0 out of 5 stars all-completing? final? Yes and no!, September 10, 2004

This review is from: The All-Completing And Final Divine Revelation to Mankind (The Seventeen Companions of the True Dawn Horse) (Paperback)
What I especially love about this book is that it's only the 11th book in the Source Text series. The final revelation is only the half-way point of the journey. This is a great joke, but there's also a profound point being made: it's not enough to have the truth revealed to you, you have to know what to do with the truth once it's revealed. Which I guess is what the last half of the journey is all about. Myself, I am struggling just to understand this book.
