4.0 out of 5 stars More yummy goodness...
What attracted me to this band was the overwhelming fan adoration of their live performances. I just became so curious I had to check them out. This album feels a little more produced than "Team Boo", the only other MOS album I've heard thus far. But I don't consider that a bad thing. These 4 songs are beautiful, swirling happy up-tempo ballads. I defy you to listen to...

Goods is a great song, and finally a step beyond the stagnant style that they carried from Our Constant Concern on to the redundant Team Boo. The other three songs on this ep unfortunately I couldn't care less about. Along For The Ride sounds like it could be an outtake from either of the aforementioned albums. Drop And Anchor and Starman both sound slightly beatlesque. A...

I defy you to listen to this EP and not have a smile on your face by the end! I've always loved the original "Starman" and yet I appreciate their upbeat rendition of a song that always kind of bummed me out (in a good way, mind you). Now excuse me while I listen to "All Day" yet again...

(i'm not actually a kid) I have been so sick of my friends telling me about their little emo bands and, from a sensible friend, i came across mates of state! HALLELUJAH!!! something that has sensible and understandable lyrics that sounds really good! ive made this cd as a present for all of my friends and i suggest it to almost everyone i meet! I can't wait for another!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's so good and doesn't waste any time, May 25, 2006
This review is from: All Day (Audio CD)
While I do wish they came out with more material in this release I guess they just weren't prepared with enough. The thing about this release that I feel is the most noteworthy to say is that they truly make "Starman" their own. It's a giddy sort of sci-fi theme song sing along, I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars aw, have some fun..., February 1, 2005

I've been to several of MOS's lives shows (including the one to sponsor this album) and though they seem at their best in person, this EP is better than passing fare. They've recently had a child and this album is a great little reminder that they're still out there. Lyrical and affectionate these songs are a great hors d'oeuvre before another full-length album.

And for gods sake, go see them live if you can! Any qualms you may have about their covers will be put to rest.

A stylistic progression maybe, but thoroughly mediocre songs by their standards. I can't believe these songs are on the same cd as Goods. That first song is such an awesome crazy fun singalong with twinkly keyboard flourishes, a crazy bouncy engaging ryhthm, and awesome melodic dual-vocal gymnastics. I won't hesitate to say it's the best song they've ever written. The other three songs just do nothing but drag it down and stink up the cd. I like Our Constant Concern a lot, but I doubt this band is ever going to make another cd worth owning.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting power duo, March 17, 2005

I heard "Goods" and had to explore this band further. "Goods" is a wonderful upbeat, innovative wall of sound (and mood). I've sampled the rest of the EP and do not find the instant connection to the rest of the effort that I had with "Goods". I guess it makes me appreciate a veterean producer and defined style.

4.0 out of 5 stars States of the Mates, February 7, 2005
By
This review is from: All Day (Audio CD)
I have been to the Noise Pop Festival the past four years. Mates of States are one of those cool bands who always play at this festival in San Francisco. Mates of State moved to San Francisco from the Midwest in 1998. They have become a major force in the SF scene along with John Vanderslice. Mates of State are a duo who are named Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel. They are good songwriters and musicians, who sound a little like Polyphonic Spree and the like. It's shocking since there are two of them. There are three new songs. There is also a cover of "Starman" by David Bowie. Why they are releasing this EP after a few albums is beyond me. It is definitely a good short record. It makes me want to see them play live. I will shortly. They are touring with my favorite band, Smoosh.
