Cher has a way!,
By Kenneth (Idaho, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All I Ever Need: Kapp Mca Anthology (Audio CD)
This double album contains the great songs you have heard before, and the songs you have never heard, but will be singing along to in no time. The vocal blendind of Sonny and Cher is only surpassed by Cher's solo songs. Titles like "Living in a House Divided" and "Classified 1A" will keep this disc in your player all day-every day. Bonus attraction--the second disc being a live recording of Sonny and Cher, featuring songs that you will love.

SONNY AND CHER ANTHOLOGY,

This cd is great for those who remember them as the adult contemporaries than the 60's popsters.Ironically,Classified 1A finally saw the light of day after being obscured for so long.Another factor,is how that song is aself prophecy by Bono himself. It's very haunting and disturbing. If only MCA wuld release their ALL I EVER NEED IS YOU,both LIVE albums and Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer and any other unreleased material they may have had.

This double cd chronichles the 70s' recordings of the Bonos. The recordings range in quality. Cher sounds her worst on songs like the Bono penned " Classified 1A", and the best on songs like " The Way of Love".Sonny always sounds pretty miserable, but what else is new.He was a character singer. This compilation is very thorough, so if you are not a die-hard fan buy " Sonny and Chers' Greatest Hits" on MCA instead, it includes all the hits and then some with less filler.. If you are a big fan the liner notes and picture book included will be a must. A very nice packaging job here.

It was amusing when Cher told Vh1's "Behind the Music" that, before she and Sonny reignited their careers via their hit variety TV show, they were relegated to clubs singing bad cover songs and Son had to wear a tuxedo. Here they're pictured in all their mid-'70's celebrity glory on the enclosed booklet, and Sonny's in a tux! Worse, many of the songs in their live repertoire are mediocre cover songs ("Once in a Lifetime", "More Today than Yesterday", etc.), stuff they should've left behind. Still, the performances (from 1971 and 1973 shows) are fairly priceless, with scripted but still funny put-downs between the couple and Bono obviously in charge. The bonus tracks are odds-n-ends, some of which are worth noting: two versions of their much-maligned Vietnam song "Classified 1A"--Cher's lead vocal and later Sonny's (but where is Cher's B-side from this single, "Don't Put It On Me"?); the haunting "Real People", sung in a rapturously low-key; "Our Last Show", a little-heard Sonny solo track that touches deeply on the past. "Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer" is edited from the LP version (a disappointment), and there are too many tracks from Cher's "Dark Lady" (and not even the best ones, by the way), but this 2-disc package still has much to offer and a very nice booklet with photos and gossip.
