Review

Stayed up till five a.m. Couldn't put it down. It's honest and believable and moving and ingenious... -- Lillian Ross, author of Here, But Not Here

From the Publisher

Brimming with rich characters and carefully researched to reflect the historic era, Spencer's novel sends readers back to a nearly forgotten time of one of the world's greatest non-violent military actions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life behind the Soviet blockade, August 21, 2004
This review is from: All Eyes Skyward (Paperback)
Years ago, I read Leon Uris's novel "Armegeddon" about the Berlin blockade and the Allied airlift to supply the city. When I saw this book, I had to buy a copy, to read another perspective on this crucial confrontation in the early days of the Cold War.

While Leon Uris's "Armegeddon" told the larger story of the allied occupation of Germany and the beginnings of the Cold War, this book takes a much more narrow focus. Spencer focuses on a small cast of characters in Berlin, or working the airlift during the Soviet blockade of the city in 1948-49. This narrower focus helps show the effects of the blockade on the residents of Berlin, and the struggle of the crews to ferry sufficient supplies into the city in the face of fatigue, weather, and accidents. We also get a glimpse of the emotional toll that such extreme circumstances can have on personal relationships. This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of the early days of the Cold War, and the impact it had on the lives of those along the front lines in occupied Germany.
