2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not her best
I have now read 4 of Erica Spindler's books and am looking forward to reading her others. Where Dead Run, Forbidden Fruit and Cause for Alarm were excellent, hard to put down books, All Fall Down was very hard to get into and stay interested in. 5.0 out of 5 stars This author has cross-genre appeal, February 25, 2000
This review is from: All Fall Down (Mira) (Paperback)
The murder of socialite Joli Anderson shakes up Charlotte, as the victim is the daughter of one of the most prominent businessmen in the area. However, the impact is felt even stronger in the suburb of Whistlestop where the corpse was found. The Charlotte Police Department takes charge of the case with the FBI providing assistance. The small Whistlestop Police Department is relegated to a clerical support role that galls Officer Melanie May, but there is nothing she can do about her assignment on the Anderson case.

FBI profiler Connor Parks is removed from the case and placed on leave because his obsession interferes with his official work. Connor feels extreme guilt caused by his ignoring his sister's cry of wolf once too many times. Unfortunately, his ignoring her cry for help leads to her death. However, Connor's profile of the killer begins to remind Melanie of an individual she knows. As she struggles with her "hunch," Melanie must deal with her influential ex-husband who has filed for custody of their four-year old son, and her growing attraction to the enigmatic Connor.

ALL FALL DOWN is a powerful romantic police procedural that will provide immense pleasure to fans of both genres. The exciting story line focuses on the interrelationships of law enforcement departments while working a particularly nasty case with high media visibility. Melanie is a wonderful character whose own obsession of being a heroine causes her anguish. Connor is sort of a fallen angel trying to regain his self worth, but losing the battle within his own soul. The secondary characters bring out the traits of the lead couple even as their subplots tie back to the main tale. Erica Spindler deserves cross genre acclaim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, April 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: All Fall Down (Mira) (Paperback)
This author really knows how to write a suspense novel! I have read all her books (except Chances Are because it's out of print), and they are all fantastic. This one was no exception. You feel as if you actually know these characters. It's a fast-paced story with a lot of plot twists. You will not be disappointed with this one. I can't wait for the next book from Erica Spindler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Ending, April 2, 2000
This review is from: All Fall Down (Mira) (Paperback)
I was skeptical of this book when I started reading it. It seemed like the author was giving away too much of the plot at during the first half and letting you know the ending. Wrong! Erica Spindler does a knockout job in this suspense novel. I thought I had it all figure out and was I ever wrong. I won't go into the plot since everyone else has done that. Just take it from me, nothing is what it seems. If you are looking for a good read, this is the book for you.

ALL FALL DOWN was a fabulous book. The pace left me breathless and the plot just kept going and going. It's everything a good mystery ought to be and then some. Bravo, Erica!

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was impressed. This was a psychological thriller with many twists and turns . . . leading up to a satisfying end. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys the genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars It made me laugh out loud, which isn't as good as you think., June 25, 2001
This review is from: All Fall Down (Audio Cassette)
Two friends and myself listened to this tape on a long drive back home from Toronto to Ottawa. We laughed so hard we were crying. Given that this is supposed to be a thriller, this is not such a good thing.

First off, though I rarely listen to audiobooks, the narrator of this tale tried to put "accents" and "masculinity" in voices as she read for them. I imagine that was to help us differentiate, but she doesn't have a whole lot of talent for it, and it just ended up sounding somewhat trite or foolish.

Secondly, the writing itself was somewhat straightforward. We had car-consensus on the murderer by the end of the first side of tape one, and then just sat back and waited for it to play out. Worse, the stereotyped use of yet another semi-psycho lesbian had us groaning out loud.

The strange thing is, we really enjoyed the ride. We haven't laughed like that in a long time... but like I said, it wasn't supposed to be a laughing story. It was laughing at, not with.

Skip this tape.

4.0 out of 5 stars All Fall Down, July 5, 2001

This is a very entertaining book to read. You won't know what will happen until the very end. It kept me awake all night to finish the book. What I really like about this book is that the relationship between characters and their struggle with life are very well written. And the suspense of the book is seemlessly fit into every characters in the book. It's fantastic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good premise, mediocre writing, January 8, 2001
This review is from: All Fall Down (Mira) (Paperback)
I loved the plot of the book. Three sisters, haunted by childhood memories that affected them all differently, find their lives entwined with a serial killer's. There are some surprising twists in the plot, but my enjoyment of the story was marred by the amateurish author voice. Spindler's style reflects no polish and detracts from the overall story. Also, I thought the hero and killer's loose ends to be tied up far too neatly to be believable at the conclusion.
