A good introduction to a master of vocalese, November 6, 2007
This review is from: All Fly Home (Audio CD)
Like several other reviewers, my introduction to Al Jarreau came by way of purchasing this album, which I added to my record collection during my junior year in college. Listening to it again as I compose this review, I remember fine spring days when I would throw open the windows of my dorm room and crank up the opening number, "Thinkin' About It Too."
I'm glad to see that so many other listeners have the same fond reaction to this at turns energetic and mellow album as I do. What makes these reactions all the more interesting is the fact that this album -- his fourth for Warner/Reprise -- contains neither the huge, Grammy-winning jazz-pop hits he went on to make ("We're In This Love Together," "Theme from 'Moonlighting'," "Mornin'") nor my single favorite Jarreau song of all, the beautifully wistful title ballad of his first successful album, 1975's "We Got By." (Jarreau recorded an obscure album in the mid-1960s that was re-released in 1999.) What it does offer, though, is an excellent cross-section of Jarreau's wide variety of jazz/pop singing styles: uptempo and slow, scat, bebop, ballads and straight pop.
If you can only have one Al Jarreau album in your collection -- but why would you want to limit yourself so? -- this is the one to have for that reason. Those of you who know him only from his more recent hits ("Random Act of Love," "Just to Be Loved," "Accentuate the Positive") should add this album to your collection in order to discover how he has evolved and grown over the years while remaining true to his own style.

Classic Jarreau, August 27, 2001
This review is from: All Fly Home (Audio CD)
This is the first Al Jarreau recording I ever bought way back in the late '70's. In my opinion it's also one of his very best. I'm listening to the CD for inspiration as I write this review. I never get tired of hearing lyrics like, "I wanna be good to you...I wanna bless your kachoo." "Fly" is a flat out swingin', rockin', waltz that'll take you breath away. I've listened to this album many, many times and it's never failed to satisfy.
