Product Description

Kitchen Composting Kit

Now it's easy to discard meat, fish, dairy and even bones right in your kitchen without the requirements of turning it like you do outdoor compost and without creating unpleasant smells. The All Food Recycling Compost Kit quickly and odorlessly converts your organic waste into a high-grade soil conditioner through the use of effective microbes or Bokashi - a Japanese word meaning "fermented organic matter." Kit includes composter and 1 gallon bag of Bokashi. Additional bokashi refills available separately.

Capacity: Bin will hold 5 gallons of food waste.Shelf Life: Bokashi enzymes will last at least a year.Size: Bin is 16" H x 10 1/2 " W x 10" DWeight: Bin is 3 pounds

How to Use:

  1. Place an initial layer of Bokashi at the bottom of the bucket.
  2. Collect your daily food waste and chop it into small pieces.
  3. Place waste in the bucket and coat it with a layer of Bokashi. For less than a 3" layer of food waste, sprinkle two fistfuls of Bokashi to cover the entire surface. Mix this layer thoroughly and compact the waste by pushing it down. Sprinkle a coat of Bokashi to cover the surface and place the plastic barrier directly on the compost mixture, completely covering it. Stir each new layer only and try not to mix it with previous layers of food waste.
  4. Periodically, drain the liquid that has accumulated at the bottom bucket.
  5. Once the bucket is filled to capacity, continue to drain any liquid and let the contents ferment for 7-10 days at room temperature.
  6. Fermented compost will not completely degrade but will retain much if it original physical properties and will have a pickled appearance. Complete breakdown of material will occur once it is transferred into the soil.

I have been using the kitchen bokashi composter for more than five years. I personally do not use it for meat, chicken or fish. It is amazing with vegetable scraps, bread and garden greens, including fresh grass. The liquid produced is nitrogen-concentrated which I must dilute with a hose-end sprayer when applying it to flowers, shrubs and trees in my yard. When the semi-solid waste is emptied, I mix it with some sand or other clean dirt and allow it to age several more months in a large box or planter before I add it to my garden as soil. The unit holds a substantial amount of vegetable waste which can be added to at any time. The liquid produced can be drained off the bottom of the unit without affecting the composting material on the top. My unit is very handy on a table top in the garage. It does not have any offensive odor and is very cleanable. SCD Probiotics K100 All Seasons Indoor Composter Kit, Tan Bucket/Bokashi

The Bokashi bin is easy to use, and the instructions are easy to follow correctly. There is not a smell in the sense of rotting compost, only a faint pickling smell from the fermentation. I found it useful to pay attention to the tip (in the instructions) of putting a plastic bag or tray in the bin to compact the compost and expell as much air as possible.

The lid was slightly cracked on one of the corners but since it sealed more or less fine I think it'll work. Overall impressed but have to wait for results.
