The All New Good Housekeeping Cookbook,
By Sheri Ann Richerson "ExoticGardening.com" (Marion, IN United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book (Hardcover)
First of all let me tell you that collecting cook books is one of my favorite things to do, so to impress me, a cook book better be pretty good. Second, if you're like me, what can a cook book possibly tell you that you don't already know? But, let me tell you this, the All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book is impressive. I have been testing the recipes from this book for a couple weeks now and not only are there some new ones that I haven't seen before, but they are easy and delicious. Another plus of the recipes I've tried is I don't have to run out to the store or plan ahead because many of the recipes use items I already have on hand. Now, if that's not enough to convince you what a great book I think this is than I don't know what would be. The book's format is very nice. It is easy to read with many full color pictures throughout. There are 1500 triple tested recipes along with various "insider" tips from chefs, cook book authors and food experts.

Splendid general cookbook,
By Dee Dee Remote (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book (Hardcover)
I bought this book earlier this year and it didn't take long before it became one of the most frequently used cookbooks in my growing collection--and certainly my favorite general soup-to-nuts cookbook yet published. It contains the three most important qualities a good basic cookbook should possess: 1) an unparalleled selection of great recipes that perfectly reflect the way real people eat today, from the classic to the contemporary, from the tried-and-true American to the adventureously international, from the sinfully rich to the saintly healthy, geared toward cooks of all skill levels; 2) a wealth of information about food, food safety and storage, and cooking techniques and equipment; and 3) page after page of glorious color photos (and line drawings) illustrating both finished products and the more complex techniques. Well-organized and comprehensive, it's refreshingly unfussy as well--it won't make you feel like a culinary philistine if you sometimes substitute frozen veggies for fresh or canned stock for homemade. Every dish I've made from this volume has turned out scrumptiously. I've found a couple of minor typographical errors here and there, but other than that this book is a perfect investment--a veritable one-volume cooking school. Buy it!

Great Book for beginners and experienced cooks,
By A Customer
This review is from: The All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book (Hardcover)
The reason I chose this book to add to my cook book collection is because it contains a recipe for Baked Ziti. I have looked high and low, at the backs of all of the pasta packages and in dozens of cook books for this particular recipe. I then decided that the first book I found with BZ in it, I would purchase. So I did and was not disappointed - there are many great recipes in this book as well as tips from experienced cooks. I plan on sending this to my son - the younger generation likes pictures in heir cookbooks!Yes, it is a heavy book, but so what? I should point out that I learned to cook through Julia Child and I am accustomed to good food. This book looks not to disappoint.

Bought by mistake,

As part of a bookclub, I forgot to inform them that I did not want this selection, so they sent it. That was three years ago and I never really looked at the book until this past thanksgiving. Since them I've used it frequently and it's amazing!! I first tried the after thanksgiving turkey soup, it was great, I then tried scalloped potatoes (which I'd usually failed at before), and they were good, then I tried the simple pasta with peas, and again very good. As I've looked through the other recipes, there are so many I've marked to be tested. I'm glad I got this book by mistake....and hate that it took so long for me to give it a try. I highly recommend this book!!

While I was growing up, I loved helping my mom cook. I used to read through her cookbooks, looking at pictures and dreaming of one day being able to cook things like those pictures. My favorite cookbook was her Good Housekeeping cookbook. Now, 23 years later, I'm out on my own. I was at my mom-in-law's house, and I noticed she had a copy of this new GH cookbook. She bought an extra copy for me. I absolutely love my All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book. The recipes are very diverse. I love the hints from the professionals, scattered throughout the book. Most of all, I love that GH kept the pictures in and kept fairly simple recipes in. If you know the Good Housekeeping name, you'd definitely know that this a top-notch cookbook!

Excellent Cookbook,

I love this cookbook. It's one of my most frequently used cookbooks. It has the best chocolate cake I have ever made in my life. It's the easy buttermilk chocolate cake. I made this cake as my first cake attempt and it was perfect. Everyone who ate it thought it was absolutely delicious. The book itself has tons of wonderful recipes. I'm trying the lemon cheesecake next and then the vanilla pound cake. I love the glossy pages and the beauty of the book. The price is amazing for such a huge book. I have this book as a supplement to my collection of Sunset and Better Homes & Gardens cookbooks. I would highly recommend this book.

good but not the best,

I already have the betty crocker (three different editions)the Pillsbury and the Better homes and gardens books. all good basic cookbooks. I do like some of the recipes in this better but some of them, well a good portion of them are "tampered with" versions of traditional recipes. my husband is the sort of guy who if, say you saute the chicken cordon blue in balsamic vinagar (one of the recipes in the book thats been "improved" on), will NOT consider it an improvement, will look at it funny and tell you to go back to the normal way of making it. so while I am glad I have this book, I cant say its my favorite. actually what I do is look at all four of these cookbooks for the same recipe and combine the best points of each..thats why I have a number of "basic" cookbooks. one small turnoff with this book for my husband (which is a plus for me, but hey, who are we trying to please here anyway?) is that most of the entrees are "made better with booze"...my husband is very sharp at detecting alcohol in his food and he doesnt like it. so I wind up having to omit the alcohol in a good portion of the entrees if made as they appear in this cookbook. |
