Book Description

“All Hallows’ Eve” – hear the whispering voices … began as a Halloween flash fiction writing contest on Facebook, sponsored by Sharon Van Orman.

Writer ‘friends’ joined in and produced the harrowing, spine-chilling short stories found in this collection.

The contest ran for the month of October and each week’s twenty-five entries were voted on with comments; the story with the most comments won.

The winning writers of the first four weeks competitions then competed for an ‘author’s dream’ prize package of free ebooks, paperbacks, hardcovers, gift cards and more.

But everyone agreed all the stories were excellent…

The Facebook thread exploded. Comments and new ‘friends’ were acquired … all with the same goal … writing!

This is not one person’s achievement, but a collective of people from around the block and around the world.

~*~

“Hal L. O’ween” is the pen-name of a group of writers from around the world that have joined together to ‘scare your pants off!’

Many thanks go to the following writers—without their involvement, this collection wouldn’t have been possible:

Devin Berglund, Brian Bigelow, Melissa Blume, Carol Bond, Michelle Patricia Browne, Jaleta Clegg, Richard Cotton, Russell Cruse, J. A. Cunningham, Toy Davis, Bella Doerres, Debra Elliott, Jiva Fang, Paul Freeman, Joseph Alan Gharagheer, Pamela Griffiths, Erik Gustafson, Rylee Hales, Denise Hemphill, Bruce Hesselbach, Rob Holliday, Katrina Jack, Gerald D. Johnston, Mel L. Kinder, Merita King, Pamela K. Kinney, Neil Leckman, Tracy Lesch, Rosemary Lynch, Ellen McKinney, Wolfen Lee McKoy, Shannon Marie Mead, Jason Mueller and C. L. Turner, Rahima Warren, Richard A. Wentworth, Lisa Williamson, Sherill Willis, Stephen L. Wilson, Kay D. Ziegler.

All things scary are in the book. Ideal for that evening when it is dark, chilly and you are curled up safe by the fire. After reading the book you may wonder how safe you really are. One to enjoy over and over. All Hallows' Eve

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag October 19, 2013
By 6 8-10
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As with any anthology of stories, there is going to be a mix of stories you like and stories you don't, as well as varying quality of writing.

These stories are SHORT. While that isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is good to know going in. As such, they don't leave much room for character and plot development, but quite a few of the stories do manage to get some in.

While several of the stories are well written, there are a few that are so poorly written as to be difficult to read, by which I mean poorly written in terms of grammar, sentence construction, and word choice. I can forgive the occasional typo, or errors that are due to being written in vernacular (meaning they aren't truly errors on the author's part but rather a sign of being true to character), but there were several errors throughout the book that were jarring enough to either take you out of the story or make the story difficult to follow. I have to wonder if any of the stories were edited, or if the editor merely collected the stories without regards to proof reading and correcting errors.

3.0 out of 5 stars More tricks than treats, but worth a look October 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If this anthology of Halloween stories was a bag full of Halloween candy, it would contain more Mary Janes than Milky Ways. There are some lovely treats in the mix—and with more than 75 stories, there’s a little something for everyone—but the quality is fairly uneven. Many of the stories are quite short—flash fiction length—which makes the collection perfect for sampling. The stories are from writers all over the English-speaking world—North America, Australia, the UK—and many use traditional legends as their sources, including my favorite story in the book, Russell Cruse’s “Away with the Faeries.” (I also enjoyed Jaleta Clegg’s “Soul Mates,” a nifty “mummy” story.)
The collection was put together by the whimsically named Hal. L. O’Ween, and is tied together with the broad theme of Halloween/Day of the Dead/All Hallow’s Eve storylines. With a double-dose of short fiction for every day in October, this might be a collection you’ll enjoy.

Mediocre but solid little book. This is one of those you read fast and think O.K., now I'm done with that. It won't stay with you but it might make a rainy day pass by faster. The scares were few but the arc was decent enough to sustain tension throughout. It had a funky beat and I can dance to it but I'll have to admit, the whole time I was reading it I was waiting for the next song.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so good October 17, 2013

I could not resist the price so I downloaded this collection of short stories to my kindle. I know these people are amateurs and some stories do start out well, but the majority are like something from high school.
