Biography

Guitarist Freddie King rode to fame in the early '60s with a spate of catchy instrumentals which became instant bandstand fodder for fellow bluesmen and white rock bands alike. Employing a more down-home (thumb and finger picks) approach to the B.B. King single-string style of playing, King enjoyed success on a variety of different record labels. Furthermore, he was one of the first ... Read more in Amazon's Freddie King Store

This CD has several of Freddy's classic hits, but several other CDs and collections have the same hits. I suspect there may be a better album. My favorite track is "The Welfare (Turns Its Back on You)" -- not a well known hit as far as I can tell, but it really should be. The opening track "You've got love her with a feeling" is awesome, and of course "Hide Away" & "Have you ever loved a Woman" are now established blues classics frequently covered by contemporary blues performers. Some of the tracks feature a distinctly 60's surf sound - rather than straight blues. I like surf music like the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean, but it seemed a little dated to me -- and I can't help feeling Freddy was under pressure at the time to be commercial, modern and hip. However there are many great tracks here and some wonderful guitar playing and singing.

I know this will get passed over because it is a budget priced collection, and it has no liner notes at all. But the sound is really superb and the selections are right on, for the most part. If you've got the money, the two Ace collections are the way to go, but if you're on a tight budget, this collection can't be beat for strictly musical value.
