Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Skye is hopeful that this will be the summer she finally meets the boy of her dreams at the beach-but when she does, he leaves before they have a chance to exchange contact information. It's the following summer before they reconnect, and, once they do, they know they are meant to be. It's not an easy relationship, with Seth working his way through college and Skye finishing high school, but true love will find a way. Skye and Seth tell their story in alternating chapters, introducing friends and families who remain in the background instead of becoming full characters. Drama with Skye's friends and Seth's ex-girlfriend pads out the story and contributes to the only real tension in the book. The time line moves quickly, covering nearly three years and giving readers more of an overview of the relationship than a real sense of depth. This title will excite established Colasanti fans, but it is unlikely to win over new readers.-Brandy Danner, Perkins School for the Blind, Watertown, MAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Skye is in love with love. All the affluent high-school sophomore needs, when she summers at the shore, is sand, snow cones, and true romance. At the last party of the season, she meets Seth, who comes from a less wealthy family and is heading to college, but they catch only each other’s first names. Over the following drama-filled year, both wonder if they will ever rekindle their initial attraction. Chapters that alternate between Skye’s and Seth’s first-person accounts feature a cast of best friends, roommates, wingmen, and an increasingly greater economic divide between the star-crossed teens. True-believing young readers need not worry whether love conquers all, though, and Colasanti brings a sweet resolution for her characters, who find all they need. --Gail Bush --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The book kept me reading but I did not enjoy all parts of the story.
My biggest problem with the portrayal of Seth and Skye's relationship was how one-sided the struggles and sacrifices seemed to be.
Laura (anadultteenreader)
The writing was well done, but honestly I just felt like nothing really happened in the book.

Skye has great parents, good friends, and even a summer friend near her family's summer house on the Jersey Shore. Still, Skye knows something is missing. She's still waiting to find the right guy--the one that will make her feel complete and be the icing on the proverbial cake. That's all Skye needs for her life to really be perfect.

Every summer Skye and her friend Adrienne joke that the summer will be different; something exciting will finally happen. Usually that isn't the case. Then Skye sees him at the party and she knows, at last, that something big really is going to happen.

Seth didn't want to join his friend at the beach party. His family doesn't rent a house on the shore--his dad owns a roller rink there. Totally not the same. But then Seth sees her and he knows he was wrong and coming to the party was the exactly right thing to do.

After one magical night Skye and Seth know they're meant to be. But before they get to a happy future they'll have to deal with a present filled with missed connections, worried parents, troublesome friends, and the difficult realities of college (and long distances) in All I Need (2013) by Susane Colasanti.
All I Need is Colasanti's sixth novel. Like her other books it is a standalone (though attentive readers might spot a cameo or two).

All I Need is written in the first person with dual narrations by Skye and Seth. Between the two narrators, Colasanti offers a nuanced story about the starts and stops of Skye and Seth's fledgling relationship. Although the novel spans a wide space of time, this story is very grounded in the distinctive sense of possibility that summer brings. Colasanti expertly opens up both Skye and Seth's futures as together (and apart) they realize the world has a lot to offer.

Quick & Dirty: Cute contemporary read that is a really fast read, but I felt that it was lacking a really intriguing plot.

Opening Sentence: "Something's going to happen tonight," Adrienne says.

The Review:

It is the end of the summer before junior year for Skye. She has two weeks left at her beach house in Sea Bright and she wants to make the most of it. She has been going to the beach house since she was a little girl and she has always dreamed of meeting her dream boy there. Skye is attending an annual party that her parents put on for all the people that live in the beach houses and there is a new boy there that she has never seen before. Of course he is really good looking and Skye can't help but think maybe her luck has finally changed after all these years.

Seth has just spent the summer at his dads run down beach house in Sea Breeze. He just graduated from high school and is getting ready to attend Penn State in the fall. His high school girlfriend and the love of his life dumped him at gradation saying a long distance relationship just wouldn't work for her. Shortly before that Seth's parents separated and now Seth doesn't really believe that love exists anymore. Why open yourself up to someone and make it easy for them to hurt you. Then he sees Skye for the first time.

Of course the two hit it off right away and they both have an unexplainable connection to each other. They spend their last few days of summer together and they are magical, but before they have a chance to exchange contact information with each other Seth ends up leaving for school. So for a year they go back to their normal lives, but they never really forget each other.

This YA love story is only partially about a boy and a girl getting together... it's more about them *staying* together through the ups and downs of a long distance relationship, a clingy ex, deciding where to attend college, differences in finances, etc. Colasanti takes us through a number of years in Skye and Seth's lives, but her light touch makes it feel like much less time has passed. Although many fictional relationships fizzle once two characters are dating, Colasanti does a good job of keeping Skye and Seth's relationship both interesting and realistic.

This is a quick summer beach read for teens (adults may wish it was more in depth), and unlike Colasanti's past books, the boyfriend is in college while the girlfriend is still in high school, so dorm life is spotlighted in all its awkward grotesqueness, yet also portrayed as an escape for Skye, who still lives with her parents. Synchronicity is a theme that weaves its way throughout this novel, and it plays a role in helping the two main characters find each other at pivotal moments. One of the best parts of the book is how well summers at Sea Bright are captured; the seaside town adds a great deal to the novel's ambiance. Search "Susane Colasanti Interview" under rtbookreviews on YouTube for an inspiring interview with the author on All I Need that really captures its spirit.

Told in alternating scenes from the girl's and boy's perspectives, the best part about this novel is that it addresses what happens after the happy ending, and that's what makes the book for me.
