All In by Nell Stark takes a look at the intense world of professional poker. Nova is forced to move to the real world of poker after becoming an online champion due to legislation changes in the US. Real time is a whole different ball game as she adjusts to the various tells and strategies of dealing with players in the flesh while fighting to maintain her sponsorship. She runs right into Vesper, a host working for the casino sponsoring a major tournament. The attraction and tension between them is expertly developed. You get an excellence sense of who these women are and how they came to be those people. The secondary characters are realistic and relevant to the story. The plot is far beyond the average with nice character growth. Nice steam in the novel! And....you'll learn a lot about poker! Maybe more than you ever wanted to.

This is the second novel I've read by Nell Stark and like the princess affair this is sure to be on my reread list. Ultimately what I enjoyed most about this book was it had many moments that caused me to break out in a smile. The main characters are likeable as are a multiple of the secondary characters. I find the presence of Good secondary characters a factor which can take a book to the next level in terms of enjoyability. Also the poker game play and gambling aspects were well written and had a believable feel that as a fan of poker I appreciated.

On a side note the main character Nova is actually seen briefly in the first chapter of the princess affair. There is a small mention in this book of Nova at an event in London hosted by Royal Flush, Nova's poker sponsor which is where the first chapter of the princess affair begins. While not an important detail to either book, it amused me when I realised this.

Nell Stark's romances are wonderful show-pieces of what a romance should be and this one is no exception. The setting, in the world of professional gambling is well-told, and smack in the middle there is this chemistry between the two main characters. Neither of the two is prepared for it and off goes a romance with great character development which is very well written and edited.

Delightful story, excellently told! For me this was pure escapism, much like on-line poker! And yet...and yet, I found myself invested in the outcome of the two protagonists because Stark pulls you right into the game, and you find yourself playing hand after hand! And the good news? You leave a winner. I like the way Stark writes, combining just the right amount of information about the careers of our heroines with credible and engaging dialog, pacing and action. This sexy little slice of Las Vegas Romance is smart, engaging and perfect for the get-away weekend without actually having to board a plane, endure sleep deprivation and break the bank.

This is a fantastic story. The book is very well written. I learnt a great deal about gambling from this story but in no way is it a boring. In fact, the interactions and growing relationship between the two Main Characters is a beautiful romance. Well developed characters interact to weave a story that will become a favourite of mine and a very special re-read. I loved the supporting characters and they all contributed positively to the story. Another winner from this talented and articulate author.

Although these two professions, poker player and casino host, aren't something that a lot of people do, the characters are believable and relatable. (You do have to trudge past the first chapter in which one of the characters makes a boneheaded move with her money. That will take up most of the Kindle sample, but the story gets much better and more realistic after that.) Both characters are likable, and Stark does a great job of laying out the scenes with enough descriptive text that you can feel a part of the story. She has a great storytelling ability that translates well to the written word. All In doesn't disappoint.

The idea of a romance between an online poker champion and a casino host made me raise a skeptical eyebrow, but this book surprised me in many ways. The author took her time building the MCs and I’m relieved to see that their essence remained unchanged throughout the story.

Nova is making the transition to live poker and turns to Vesper for advice. At first she is very flirtatious, which makes Vesper uncomfortable - her past had a big impact on her self-protective instincts and a relationship is out of the question. Power has an important role in their interactions; Nova and Vesper constantly fight for it. They try to keep things casual to protect their hearts and careers, and this atmosphere is incredibly sexy:

"No one had ever touched her the way Vesper had – tenderly and possessively, all at once."

The author's style is sharp most of the time, but I got bored here and there. I blame my lack of knowledge of poker theory, but lengthy descriptions of strategies and tournaments didn’t help. On the other hand, the ending couldn’t be more perfect! I read it at least four times.

The main character, Nova, is an online gambler with a head for figures. Forced to remake her fortune via face-to-face gambling puts her in the orbit of Vesper, a host at a casino which is hosting a large poker tournament. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this very much as I'm not a poker player, but the cards and gambling was well handled by Stark and was appropriately central to the story without overstaying its welcome. Nova and Vesper are engaging and witty characters, and both have some gumption when faced with difficult circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
