Book Description

AN ORIGINAL SHORT STORY FROM THE ACCLAIMED AUTHOR OF THE NOVELS THE OPPOSITE OF ME AND THE UPCOMING SKIPPING A BEAT . . .

Thirty-year-old Elise Andrews couldn’t bring herself to marry Griffin, her childhood friend turned sweetheart, so she let him walk away. Eight months after their breakup, she arrives in her hometown of Chicago on Christmas Eve and hears a voice from the past calling her name in the grocery store. It’s Griffin’s mother, Janice, who invites Elise over for a neighborhood gathering of eggnog and carols.

Walking into Janice’s house sends Elise tumbling headlong into memories of her relationship with Griffin—and with Janice, who exudes the kind of warmth Elise ached for after her own mom passed away when she was six. But Griffin has moved on, and suddenly Elise doubts her decision to give him up and lose her chance at being folded into his wonderful family. Confused and reeling, she goes in search of an answer to a universal question: How do we say good-bye to people we’ve loved without losing everything they’ve meant to us?

Heartwarming and witty, All Is Bright is a charming story about coming home for the holidays—and finding gifts in the most unexpected of places.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disclaimer needed January 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although I enjoyed this short story, I certainly wouldn't have bought the book if I'd realized it wasn't a novel. This is the second time in a row I've purchased what I thought was a novel on kindle, and found a short story followed by excerpts. I think there needs to be a disclaimer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indulge, It's worth it! December 22, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
All is Bright is a short story by Sarah Pekkanen, author of "The Opposite of Me" and soon to be released "Skipping a Beat." The story takes a look at the love and heartache of a woman named Elise who deals with her feelings regarding a love let go. Elise discovers that sometimes letting go is the best thing you can do for someone you truly love as well as yourself. She learns a wonderful lesson about love an acceptance in the process. This short story was sweet, emotional, engaging and comical. I laughed out loud at many parts of this story. Sarah has a wonderful ability to connect with the should of her reader. Every woman will be able to connect to this story on some level.

As I was reading I felt the thoughts and feelings Elise was going through, even those left unsaid. I appreciated the wisdom and humor of the Seven Widows of Windham. Ms. Pekkanen truly is a talented author and has definitely chosen the right genre! All is Bright is the perfect short story to read this Christmas! If your looking for that little something extra to give to a sister, girlfriend, mom, daughter or maybe even your grandma, All is Bright is the perfect stocking stuffer! Personally I suggest it as a gift to yourself for all the holiday shopping, wrapping, traveling, cooking or anything else you have been doing for others this season. The story would make a great bedtime read for Christmas Eve, or a relaxing read by the fire with some hot cocoa or wine! Best of all the book ends with bonus material!! If your dying to read "Skipping a Beat" you can preview it by buying All is Bright!

In short, it is TOTALLY worth the .99 cents! Go ahead, Indulge!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet January 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I obviously knew that it was a short story, but I didn't anticipate how short it would be. Since "All is Bright" was just a few chapters, I am going to aim my review more at Sarah Pekkanen rather than her story. I am impressed how rich of a history and backdrop she could paint with so few words. Only a few pages in, I was pulled into the life of Elise, the main character. Elise exposes us to a rage of emotions that made me feel immediately sympathetic to her situations. A delightful and funny cast was set around her. My absolute favorite part was reading Nana's character. I adore snarky grandma types that can fix the world's problems with their advice. The part I liked the least was the abrupt ending. I was so surprised where it ended that I felt shocked rather than sad that it was over.

Conclusion:
Over all, this is a testament to the incredible author Sarah Pekkanen is. Secretly I am hoping that this is a test story and that she will write a full novel with these characters. I would read it in a heartbeat. "All is Bright" would be a perfect read for a short trip or a quiet evening. It also includes a sneak peak at "Skipping a Beat" as well as the first chapter of "The Opposite of Me". So there is plenty to keep you hungry for more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Short story! How about a long thought? September 7, 2011
By Bun
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another of those short stories that are so short you wonder why you bothered paying .99 cents and went to the trouble of downloading! The premise was reasonably interesting, but why write something that is totally incomplete? Don't waste your time or money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Short story... What? July 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thank goodness it was only 99 cents but nowhere in the description did it mention that this book was not a novel. It took me 15 minutes to read. I could have used that time to find a book that would last me a lot longer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun March 17, 2013

Sarah Pekkanen has a nice line with these novellas; my only complaint is that they are too short. A fun read with a likeable main character - like all of Pekkanen's books - I recommend it.

The Story was Ok, but it was too short of a story, I think they could have expanded it more. Thats why I was disappointed.

More About the Author

Sarah Pekkanen is the internationally-bestselling author of the novels THINGS YOU WON'T SAY, CATCHING AIR, THE BEST OF US, THESE GIRLS, SKIPPING A BEAT and THE OPPOSITE OF ME. Please find her on Facebook and twitter @sarahpekkanen!

BIO: Sarah is the mother of three boys, which explains why she wrote part of her novel at Chuck E. Cheese. Seriously. Sarah penned her first book, Miscellaneous Tales and Poems, at the age of 10. When publishers failed to jump upon this literary masterpiece (hey, all the poems rhymed!) Sarah followed up by sending them a sternly-worded letter on Raggedy Ann stationery. Sarah still has that letter, and carries it to New York every time she has meetings with her publisher, as a reminder that dreams do come true. At least some dreams - Brad Pitt has yet to show up on her doorstep wearing nothing but a toolbelt and asking if she needs anything fixed. So maybe it's only G-rated dreams that come true.
